Prairie Lights? - 12-08-2007, 02:59 PM

Hey,
I wasn't sure where to post this. We are heading out to the Prairie Lights display in Grand Prairie tonight. Anyone have any suggestions for shooting? I have a Nikon D50 with a 18-55 mm lens and a Tamron 70-300 zoom. I don't have an external flash. I tried to do some night shots a church live nativity last night and almost everything was blurry because I didn't want to use flash and evidently I can't hold the camera still!

Any suggestions to make tonight's shots turn out better would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!

Tripod would be my suggestion. Either that or a 2.8 lens.

Tripod or a monopod and a very fast lens... plus high ISOs... you can get some nice stuff out there. Here is some of the stuff I shot for the City on opening weekend...

(Wave as you go past, that's also my neighborhood!)

Thanks guys. I was thinking a tripod would probably be my best solution, but since it was supposed to be a casual family thing, I don't think my husband would appreciate me taking it! Of course, now we aren't going because I just googled it and found out Grand Prairie is over an hour from us, one way. So the decision was made that maybe I should look for something that does not involve us being trapped in the car with a five year old and a four year old and my mother( who can be more annoying on than the children sometimes!) for a min. of three hours.

Sorry I won't get to wave at you Brad!

Its ok.. stopping and shooting with a tripod is discouraged for most of the lights, anyway.... so shoot near home and share. :)

For anyone else that plans on going out to shoot Prairie Lights... I'd recommend a bean bag and shooting with the camera braced on that on the window sill of the car... getting out is highly frowned upon... I had special access since I was shooting it for the city.
