File Synchronization - 12-08-2007, 05:33 PM

Ok...
So my work computer does this nifty thing where every time I log in or log out or Windows, it synchronizes my "My Documents" file with one on the network. That way no matter which computer I log into, I have my files at hand. And it is a backup in case anything happens to my computer.
Now, the question is... where can I get something like that on my home computers. The one I'm talking about doesn't look like a 3rd party program either. It looks like part of windows.

Try searching in Microsoft's site for "Folder Share".

I use Synctoy for my backup but it is not "automatic" - you have to use the scheduler if you want it to run at specific times.

Folder share is what you're looking for.

Seems like the info they present there is reason enough to stay away from them.

Any idea if SyncToy works with XP 64-bit? MS has several power toys that don't play nicely with XP 64-bit

Interesting that you bring this up around this time of year. I am currently managing a project that is a replacement application for the My Documents roaming profile feature. We have found that when our users access the network via VPN they are loosing files during the My Documents synchronization process. Instead of getting a fix from Microsoft we had developers create an application called MyFiles which is a replacement fix until Vista comes out. We are told by MS that Vista will fix the VPN issue with utilizing My Documents synchronization.

I am no techie so if you want information deeper than what I have already described your talking to the wrong person. I’m just the project manager 

I was looking at synctoy, and it says that version 1.2 is for XP, and that 1.4 is for Vista, but when I try to click on the link to get to 1.2, it takes me to 1.4.
Is 1.4 backwards compatible with XP?

1.4 does work with Windows XP 32-bit. If you want to run it in a 64-bit environment you have to go to the 2.0 Beta. I hope this helps.

Like I have said, I use SyncToy for my backup needs. We use FolderShare at the day job extensively.

Is this issue documented? I make heavy use of GPO-based folder redirection, and have quite a few VPN users as well. I'd sure rather do something before I get stung.
