Christmas suggestioins - 12-11-2007, 03:42 PM

I have family members asking me what I'd like for Christmas, but most of the things I'm thinking about is outside of all of our budgets. Here's the question...what inexpensive things have you really benefitted from, such as books, gear...things I'm obviously not thinking of? I shoot Canon and use a MAC so I'm sure there's plenty of things out there. Can you help me out?

Letting Go Of The Camera - 12-11-2007, 03:52 PM

Have some one get you a copy of Brooks Jenson's (editor of Lenswork) "Letting Go of the Camera."

I find it a constant renewing source of ideas and challenges.

A subscription to "Lenswork" wouldn't be bad either.

Here are a couple of things on the "cheap list" for me this year . . .

A difusser for the off-camera flash

One of those 5-in-1 reflector things

A subscription to Shutterbug (got a 2 year one to PopPhoto last year)

An extra camera battery

A new CF card or two

If you need ideas, just go browse B&H . . . or if you have it, you can drool all over the hard copy of their catalog .. . mine came two days ago. . . .evil B&H . ..LOL

I always like shirts for christmas.

Currently I like the ones from Eddie Bauer that are wrinkle free.

I usually buy all of my photo gear and stuff my self. Any thing that I want would be too expensive (as you said) and anything not too expensive, I already have, so I just ask for shirts.

I just thought of the things I touch the most outside of the camera, computer, and cigarettes.
  • Good Tripod
  • Light Tripod
  • New Bag
  • Upstrap
  • Puffer
  • Lightsphere-II CLOUD
  • Remote Trigger
  • Good LED flashlight
  • Monopod
  • CF Cards -Fast
  • Spell Checker

I claim to use none effectively….

Boy, that opens up a whole new category. Maybe this should be moved to the "adults only" section ???

Tom, I'm going to get a video light for my camcorder, I don't need anything fancy but I want something that will give me some decent light and run for a while (at least an hour). The price is great on this Sima light. Have you used it much and what is your assessment?

It is very small but provides some light.
I would go with something bigger and more substantial. This runs on two AAA batts.

I used it last night to isolate a couple inside a house. I don't think it would provide enough coverage. It should last quite a while though. They sell them at Best Buy.

i got a nice in-expensive remote for my 40d - cost around $34 shipped...that's do-able - and really will end up being pretty useful i think.
