Work banned Flickr - 12-11-2007, 08:59 PM

I work for Vought Aircraft Industies in Dallas.
They allow internet use durring lunch and breaks and I am grateful.
No complaints on the stuff they ban but I never thought of Flickr as a problem.
Perhaps because anything under the sun can be posted by any kook that has an
agenda. Maybe I should reconsider my account there.

Flickr has nothing to do with your work blocking Flickr. Most work place blocks anything related to Photos, videos, social networking and dating sites.

I'd suspect one of two things is the reason, since Vought deals in Federal Contracts.

Nudity is not banned on Flickr.
or:
There may be a known or possible security risk on Flickr to your network and data.

Where I work, the official web site for the Texas Lotto is blocked. The reason given is "gambling". No biggie, the few times I buy a ticket, I just check the numbers here at home.

If they are using something like Websense, it is a subscription that updates daily. It will arbitrarily add sites and remove/recategorize them. As far as PROXIES go, we block them as well...So that trick doesn't work.

My advice, follow the rules of your office..It's not worth getting fired trying to circumvent their security methods just so your can see a picture. Trust me, I cannot tell you how many people I have had to "investigate" over the years. Not worth it.
