Angry AT&T U-Verse! - 12-13-2007, 05:11 PM

<Rant>

So I get signed up for what seems like an AWESOME service... combined internet (fiber) 6 Mbit down and 1 Mbit up stream plus television/DVR service that you can access over the internet. Sounds good right?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the internet service. It works perfectly (so far).

The TV service absolutely BLOWS! You can only record 1 HD show at a time. I was told that I could record 4 HD channels simultaneously. That's true as long as the channels are non-HD and you've got to be watching one of them... and the rest of the TVs in the house are turned OFF. Weird huh.

And the video quality of the service is horrendous. It's just plain bad. It took 3 guys 6 hours to install the system... running new cable and whatnot. The technical support is worse than horrendous. They are completely useless and have zero idea of how technology works at all.

After going through Level 1 tech support and then Level 2 tech support on Monday, they said they couldn't help me so they would call Yahoo and have them call me within 24 hours. No call. So today I called them back... went through the same thing again. Level 1 and then to Level 2. The Level 2 guys must've been completely high because he said "you can only record 4 streams. How many shows do you have recorded today?" I told him that I have several shows recorded today but none of them are overlapping... so at any given time, I'm only using a single stream. He wanted to argue and say that I was using 4 streams already because I had 4 different shows recorded during the day at different times. What a moron! I could go on but I won't... I just cancelled the service. Almost made it a week!

I am keeping the fiber internet though... at an additional $5 per month since I discontinued their TV service.

Sorry to hear it, but that's pretty consistent with what I've heard about UVerse TV services from users in Houston, as well. Only being able to record on HD stream at a time is a definite deal-breaker for me, and it's disappointing to hear that they're compressing the video so heavily. From what I've heard the limited bandwidth of UVerse (compared to Verizon), is due to the fact that UVerse is not fiber all the way to the house.

It's a shame we can't get Verizon FIOS here, I've heard very good things about it.

I'm kind of glad I turned them down then. they stopped by my house a few nights ago..I was really close to signing, but they couldn't touch my 10mb/s down 1mb/s up service from roadrunner. Glad to hear all of these things now though, I was planning on singing when (or if) they ever increased their net speeds.

I looked at it, changed my AT&T DSL to AT&T U-Verse internet but decided to stay with DishNetwork instead. It was not a better deal for the amount of TV we watch.

I have both UVerse and Comcast - long story, don't ask....
On my TV's UVerse is better, but everything said already holds true...I'm considering Dish but can't do DirecTV - you gotta "buy" the equipment, then STILL pay a monthly lease for it
I love the Pro level internet on Uverse and will probably keep it, but will be changing TV to something else....

Will, I just converted to U-verse last week also.

The image quality is horrible. HD is not very good at all - you can only watch one HD channel in your home at once. The picture is horribly compressed - shows artifacting, poor color, compression squares..etc. You can look at a still image and the background is constantly moving with the compression squares.

I only wish it was....I don't have FTTP, since my neighborhood had existing copper, I was only able ot get FTTN so they are trying to push HD over paired copper wire

Good info to have.. So now I can mark off Dish Network (worst company I have ever dealt with in my entire lifetime....long story), and U-Verse. Time Warner is doing fine right now for me, but not near enough HD channels and no NFL network. BLAH.

Comcrap is another that I was not found of either... Can't get Verizon here in S. Arlington either.. :(

Yeah... Verizon needs to get their butts in gear. I swear, FIOS is all around NRH, but not IN NRH.

We have Cox down here and when AT&T first came out up here with that deal Cox was all over it showing everything that was wrong with it...including the HD mess. For right now I am happy but you know how that goes....

I have U-Verse and it blows. I think I will move to Direct-TV next.

Jake: I didn't disconnect my DirectTV service yet... so I could make sure that U-Verse was good. DirectTV's quality is awesome! It has been the best that I have seen to date. I'll be taking the U-Verse boxes out this weekend and putting the DTV ones back in.

Happy Verizon FiOS customer here, haven't had any major problems with the service and their customer service has been pretty good compared to other companies. Though I'm not too keen on their DVR. They updated the UI recently so it looks more slick and is more userfriendly but it still leaves a lot to be desired, sometimes missing scheduled shows entirely. Thinking about getting an HD Tivo.
