Request: Please leave EXIF - 12-17-2007, 09:39 AM

Just a friendly request that when you post images, please leave the EXIF intact if your processing software allows it. Some of us, like myself, are on a constant learning curve so seeing some of the technical info is helpful. Additionally, it helps to troubleshoot a problem with an image if you ask for assistance.

TIA

While I think it's not a bad idea, asking everyone to do this may not be realistic. Some professionals consider their camera settings to be somewhat of a 'trade secret'. For those asking for help, I completely agree. It does really help us help them.

Really? First I've ever heard this. Interesting.

John, I've been making it a point to process my images in a manner that keeps the exif data intact. I agree, looking at exif data can sometimes help with the "learning curve", but I've also found that when processing images through LR using the preset that saves jpegs for email, LR strips the exif. Saving a high-res jpeg keeps the exif. Canon exif includes the ISO. Nikon exif seems to be lacking in that. (from a recent post where I checked exifs)
Recently took a look at a sport shooters list of favorite images. IIRC he was an SI shooter. Noticed that the majority of his sports shots were shot at 1/800 of a second. He provided all the settings of each photo so it was not necessary to dig into the exif.

That's not true. Nikon also includes the ISO.

That's why I said it seems Nikon doesn't include ISO. I'm wondering if it is a function of the program the image was processed in or something more insidious.., like if you're going to shoot in program mode you must not care about ISO...

Rather curious now, but not curious enough to switch from Canon to Nikon.

I use a program called Panda. It adds right-click functionality to Windows that displays the Exif info. There are other programs that can do this, but Panda is quick and simple.

It's really odd that the ISO was excluded for those cameras. They do have the ISO in their standard EXIF metadata. They were processed with CS3 so I am not sure how this information got eliminated.

It's not the D70s because here is a photo taken with the D70s that has the information in it:

Richard: You must save the photo to your computer and then open it with an EXIF viewer.

More like a plug-in for windows, but it only shows up in the right-click menu when you right-click over an image. And yes, you can use it in your web browser. I think Abel has a link to it somewhere in one of the forum stickys. I'll look around for it in the meantime.

OK, thanks. I'll look for something like it in Mac format. Should I google it as "exif viewer"?
