Dan Fogelberg died Sunday at 6:00 AM at the age of 56 from Prostate Cancer. The lyrics from one of his songs is below...
Lyrics for: Same Old Lang Syne
Met my old lover in a grocery store
The snow was falling Christmas Eve
I stole behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve
She didn't recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried
Took her groceries to the checkout stand
The food was totalled up and bagged
Stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation dragged
We went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldn't find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car
We drank a toast to innocence, we drank a toast to now
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness but neither one knew how
She said she'd married her an architect
Kept her warm and safe and dry
She would have liked to say she loved the man
But she didn't like to lie
I said the years had been a friend to her
And that her eyes were still as blue
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I saw doubt or gratitude
She said she saw me in the record store
And that I must be doing well
I said the audience was heavenly
But the traveling was hell
We drank a toast to innocence we drank a toast to now
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness but neither one knew how.
We drank a toast to innocence, we drank a toast to time
Reliving in our eloquence, another old lang syne
The beers were empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away
Just for a moment I was back in school
And felt that old familiar pain
And as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain
Rest in Peace Dan

To which I must add, guys, if you are 40+, get checked. Got checked last Spring. Glad I did. At 58, I had cancer. Now, I don't. Go get checked.

Scheduled for the colonoscopy on Wednesday. Put it off too long already.
Sorry to hear about Fogelberg. A good musician.

That's a shame. It really is a terrible disease. Like Howard says, get it checked!

Another good one from our generation is lost to the circle of life. Albeit too early.
Like Howard said, guys, please, if you are 40 and up, for God's sake get that prostate checked annually. I know, I know. That type of exam goes against all we've been taught about being a "Man", and it's embarrassing as anything. But, oh so necessary.
Especially my AA brothers. After all, prostate cancer is the number one killer in our communities for those of us who've been blessed enough to have made it to this age group.
RIP Dan Fogelberg. | | | |

My Dad died of prostate cancer. I just finished 10 weeks of daily radiation treatments for my prostate cancer(discovered in my annual blood test). GET THE PSA CHECKED AT LEAST ANNUALLY. I won't know the results for sure until my Feb checkup, but things look good.

Too bad.
I heard an interview with Fogelberg where explained how he came up with Same Old Lang Syne while trying to play Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture by ear at the piano.

I can actually remember hearing this song when I was a kid, it was one of my *first* memories. I remember living in Ohio, and my mom picking me up from daycare, I can remember laying my head on her lap, while she was driving. I can see the street lamps passing by, and I remember listening to that song on the radio.

Heather, what does that say about how things have changed.... I too can remember laying down in the front seat with my mom as my dad drove us all over Texas on trips.... Try that now and you would be a child abuser....how things change....
