Ok..we have had 2 phone calls now saying my husband owes $7000 some dollars and can we verify the last 4 digits of his SSN? Of course we dont' and they get all bent out of shape...they have sent nothing in the mail...

What should I do...I have a phone number from Orlando FL 407 area code??

I called the number back...you have reached a number that has been disconnected or no longer in service??

Contact the various credit bureau services and get a copy of your credit report to see if someone has been using your name to obtain credit.

I was a victim of identity theft and the first indication of it was a collection agency calling me to tell me I owed money. They asked for the last four digits of my SS# but I wouldn't give it to them. Never give out any personal information like that on a phone call you receive no matter who they say they are. If you initiated the phone call to your bank, credit card company, or other financial institution then it is a way of identifying yourself and it should be OK.

It could also be someone trying to get you to provide personal information to steal your ID. If it is a collection agency they have to provide you a name of the company and a way to verify their claims, like who turned over the debt to them for collection.

I know its a scam. And we have a fraud alert on our credit already. No credit without someone callling our house and verifying a code...funny thing is, it was so long ago I don't remember the code so I have to wait 7 years for it to go away!!! I will contact the BBB toomorrow...it makes me nervous because it is the second call.

google the phoen number i.e. 800-222-1111 scam, and see if something comes up.
If you have the name of the caller, or the company, do the same and see if they come up on scam boards.

Start trying to sell the person that calls you something. Make up a good story about how you're poor and you have started selling pencils over the phone.

Renae,

My wife received a similar type of call and the truth is that the caller was a person from a bank and helped me to fix the problem created by an ID theft ring. Ask the person calling to ID who they are, who they represent and where they are located. Then call that business' general number and ask for that person. (In my situation, the person was from a well-known bank) If the person is not with a bank or financial institution, then point blank ask them why they have an interest. Ask them to give you the last 4 digits of your husband's SSN. Do not confirm the last 4 digits! Then ask them to fax or email to you any documents that suggests your husband owes them or anyone money. Then tell them explicitly that if they can not provide any proof, you will have your attorney contact them and ask them for their call-back number. Also explain that you will gladly hear their claim in court when they file a lawsuit to recover the money and have to present to the court proof of any claim.

its easy to modify your out going caller ID info.

When ever block buster calls us to remind us of an over due movie it comes across as Unkown Name from number 000-000-0000

also check to make sure the recording is indeed a phone company "Disconnected" recording. YOu can have an answering maching pick up on the 2nd ring and have a bogus greeting saying its disconnected.

Well guess who called again today...apparently they have learned something though...they called, I answered and got a recording to wait for someone to answer. Guess what??? they never answered and within seconds, the phone disconnected. Too bad, I had a great story for them!!!!!!!!! they ruined all the fun
