The satisfaction of giving - 12-22-2007, 01:18 PM

Although I'm taking a hiatus from posting, my friend, Wes, suggested I share this with the community.

I shot this image of a coffee house owner roasting beans and delivered it to him mounted in a black frame. He was so elated to receive it, smiling the entire time while showing it to his employees, that he hung it on a wall in a prominent spot where patrons can't miss it when they walk into the house. While it's definitely nice to get paid for a gig, it's times like this that remind me of why I picked up a camera again three years ago.

The shot was basically unplanned and utilized only available light. I printed the image at 6x8" on 8.5x11" Epson heavy matte paper with the title "David Clarke, Connaisseur de Cafe". The very small print reads "Photograph Courtesy of John Tucker Photography". Sorry for the small size, but it's sized for my web site.

Very nice. Perhaps he'd let you leave business cards in case anyone asks... Any other businesses that might have clients where you could do the same? You never know where your next opportunity might come from.

Very nice photo and good story. When I rant about not giving your images away I'm referring to publications and web sites that want to use them for free, so I'm all for this and hopefully it will bring you some additional work.

I still donate my work for some charities and have even agreed to trade photos for some other reciprocation, but not for publications.

Great photo!

Ken: Thanks. There is an "artists wall" in his establishment, where you can display your art (along with biz cards) with prior arrangement. I'll probably do that as well after I go through my images and print those that are wall worthy. :-)

David: Thanks for the comments. I agree with you regarding the free stuff and handle it similarly myself.
