walmart photo nazi's - 12-23-2007, 12:13 AM

Let me tell you, those peeps at Wally-World need to get a life. I needed some quick pics of my baby printed and they wouldn't give them to me w/o a release from the photographer.

UMMM, I was the phototag...

She said that she needs proof that I took the pictures??? HOW I asked???

SO, what do you do??? The pics aren't THAT good (I was playing with my new 50mm)

Geeeez, all I wanted was a few pics printed....I guess I will take it as a complement :)

when I do print at "god forbid" CVS or walmart for a quicky, I either do the "in seconds" machine, and or I show the lab person my business card and license, and tell I am the copyright owner, in advance.

If you don't have a card.. I don't know what to tell you. how do you prove it? haha.

Personally, I appreciate the fact that they're making the effort.

If you don't have them already, you need business cards.

www.vistaprint.com

tell them I sent you and you can get daily emails from them promoting everything from signs to pens. But, their cards are pretty inexpensive.

Why should someone who is NOT a professional photographer have to purchase business cards to get THEIR OWN PERSONAL photographs printed?

Why would they tell you this if the photo had no copyright printed on either front or back?

Someone I know just went through this. After arguing with Walmart about the pic, they had to drag the manager of the store over and then they had the release forms behind the counter that apparently the girl didn't know about so they just made her sign one.... I am sure all Walmarts are different though.... Here is what it states on their website.

PHOTO CENTER COPYRIGHT POLICY

Walmart.com will not assist in the copying of a photograph that is signed, stamped, or otherwise identified by any photographer or studio as copyrighted material, or any photograph that appears to have been taken by a professional photographer or studio, even if it is not marked with any sort of copyright, unless we are presented with a signed Copyright Release. Negatives or digital images of a copyrighted image will be retuned to you unprinted and you will be provided instructions on how to present Walmart.com with a signed Copyright Release. In addition, Walmart.com will not assist in the copying of any state or federal document, including but not limited to, driver's licenses, passports, and social security cards.

I appreciate them doing this to protect our images from being printed w/out our permission and they are doing it because they have been sued. You can get almost free business cards from Vista Print like Tom said or embed your copyright and contact information in the IPTC fields of your images and then ask them to confirm it. I believe their new machines will show all of this information. The embedded information along with your I.D. should work. If all else fails just carry a release made out to you and signed by you that you can give them, that protects them and that's all they really are concerned with.

Actually, not all of them have that capability yet. I was talking to the photo person at walmart the other day in my town.

The good thing is that they have the copyright release forms behind the counter. That should suffice for what they need.

Cool Good for them... - 12-23-2007, 03:18 AM

...up to a point.

Isn't this taking things a bit too far?

I guess I don't need to worry for a couple reasons: I will be taking my original negatives to them for printing. They certainly won't see anything in my pictures that might suggest that I am a professional.
