So... I didn't even notice until the ride home this morning, but 97.1 is the Eagle again.
For the love of god people, if you like hard rock / rock music, listen to them so that it doesn't go away again.

I think the radio world just goes by predicted trends and what they think the most people are likely to listen to. You get a new executive with control over a station, and if he has a stone to grind, or thinks a genre won't last, he kills a station.
I'm happy the eagle is back, when it died I quit listening.

I've actually wondered on many occasions how the raitings work. I know they gets ratings reports and stuff... but where do the numbers come from?

Toad | I suppose they could do that 'Nelson' box stuff, but even then I don't see how that can represent an entire control group. They usually drop the nelson boxes in a single city along a certain line of homes.
OK, so if you drop the boxes along a street, that means you get data about the type of people who live in the neighborhood. If this is a high class neighborhood, you end up finding out that the rich group likes Classical Piano and NPR or whatever it is millionaires listen to. So you go and cancel the rock stations in light of nelson ratings, because your control group doesn't like it. I don't see how you can just drop boxes around and get good results. I suppose you drop it in all different neighborhoods, an equal amount of boxes, and you get an idea roughly, but eh. I think ratings are things only executives and advertisers care about.

For those wondering where the numbers come from .. http://www.arbitron.com/home/content.stm Unless they've changed in the past 10 years, there are no "boxes" like for TV. Usually phone surveys. Small market stations will generally follow larger market trends, however there is a growing number of local small market stations that actually act like local stations and play local news/info as well as what the listeners want in the way of music. The corporate world (ie Clear Channel, Cumulus, etc..) has killed radio. I have no idea what this 97.1 is like, but if you have a local, low power FM station that is broadcasting in your area, I would urge you to give them some support. http://www.freepress.net/lpfm/
