The Austin Statesman has some New Years pics that may also provide some ideas.

Sparklers spelling out 2008 would be a nice effort as is in one of these shots. Spelling out "Happy New Year - 2008" might be more of a challenge.

i had a very very boring nite, i spent it w/my x inlaws, nice people though.

pic#1 is a bread made in holland, its called olliebollen
pic#2 they are my x inlaws..oma & opa, its a dutch name for grandparents
pic#3 oma is finally done cooking the olliebollen, she says its to much work
pic#4,5,7 opa is showing off he's bud collection, pic#6 opa said he couldnt
resist and drank those two beers n kept the bottles
pic#6 im gunna try to quit

Here are a couple of mine.. Mark III, 35L F1.4 and ISO 3200 all night.

BTW: Everyone is right. Bellbottom's INCREDIBLY SMOKEY! Oh.. and 2 patrons did something "exciting" but I can't post that here.

Which band was playing there? Nice shots! I love the lighting there for such a small stage. And, yes, very smokey!

Nice shots Andrew. I especially like the multiple colors on the first one, and that the drumstick blur makes it look like he's wielding a baseball bat.
So maybe your other shots can go in "human form"?

We loaded up a christmas tree with fireworks and blew it up! It was awesome!
