What the heck is going on in Texas!? - 01-03-2008, 06:33 PM

Ok, I started my New Year with a phone call: "Hello, this is dispatch, they need you, they have a 22 year old male stabbed to death." The first murder of the year. Now this in DFW, a double homicide honor killing of two girls. Is there something in the water?

I don't know what is going on... But I work in the school district the two girls are from. Very close to the house they surrounded. We have lost seven students since school started. Explaining car wrecks and other accidents is one thing... This is beyond my comprehension.

If you come up with answer of what is happening that will make it any less painful for my students, please pass it along.

Murph,

One reason why we are moving away - far away<g> This summer a police office was shot and killed just about a mile away from our house. Couple of days ago a guy was shot and killed half a mile away. It's getting closer and we ain't waiting for some nut to come knocking on our door! In 2006 the murder rate here was 9.2/100,000 (see http://www.city-data.com/city/San-Antonio-Texas.html) and I think last year it may have topped 10! Where we are going (Port Angeles, WA) it is about 1-2/100,000 (when there is one murder it is 5.2/100,000 but in the 8 year period from 1999 to 2006 only two murders were registered) which is close to what it was where I come from (Iceland). And with all those kids being killed last year it is just horrible!

Best regards,

I've noticed that since I moved here 4 years ago that Texans are crazy (no offense to any of you). Women drowning their kids, women chopping their kids' arms off with steak knives, men killing their families and the list goes on. I know it happens in other parts of the country as well, but I had never seen this much violence anywhere else that I've lived. And there are a lot of military crazies here, but those are everywhere else too.

I love Texas otherwise.

It's shocking, but I'm not shocked. It's just the natrual progression of our society. From a biblical standpoint I'd say that we are reaping from the seeds that we've been sewing for the last few decades. However, we can't go into that here.

Reality check: It's just going to get worse.

killeen is murder capital of texas, i wouldnt go there during the day. San antonio i thought was pretty bad, i left that place over 12years ago and it just gets worse every year. I always use to compare the first months (jan) murder rates to see how austin ranks with SA. By the end of this month SA will have abt 17 homicides, and Austin maybe 2.

And I believe it was just yesterday or the day before when I noticed in the paper that two men had been injured in a shooting. It appears that one of them was trying to trace the outline of a loaded 357 (?) handgun on the other for a tattoo when someone or -ones fumbled the pistol and it shot one in the hand and the other in the side...
Not the brightest lightbulbs in the box as it were...

Paul,

Yeah, why can't these people just go out and buy a camera. Then they can shoot anyone and everyone they want to - over and over and over again!

It just makes me sick, particularly when the kids are on the receiving end:(

Well, you know how we always used to think that all the nuts were in California, with all the crazy stuff that went on there (Manson murders et al.) Turns out that Texas is now the second most populated state in the country after California. Population and crime have a direct correlation. And how many of the new Texans are some of those nuts escaping California for cheaper real estate?

Sorry, I don't know her. I work with students from all five high schools in LISD, but my interaction with staff on the home campuses is pretty limited.
