S-VHS-C to DVD - 01-24-2008, 10:48 PM

Anyone know of a company which will transfer S-VHS-C tapes to DVD? If so, would appreciate knowing the company's web site or contact information. I'm looking for the best quality transfer possible but I don't need any special chapter marking or editing, etc.

Thanks,
Scott

if you find one let me know - my old vhs-c camera doesn't work well anymore, and i used to be able to transfer camera to camera, but still have some of those tapes around i'd like to convert.

We bought a combo-DVD/VHS recorder, with a one-button xfer feature. We have tapes (VHS and VHS-C) going back to late 70s. If you have very many tapes, the new deck will be a better deal. We paid under $200 over a year ago, they're probably less than that now.

The VHS-C use an adapter to make the smaller tape fit in a regular VHS machine. It came with our VHS-C camera.

I think a combo unit would be ideal also. The model below is fairly cheap and seems to have gotten some good reviews (keep in mind this is a refurb):

One of our forum sponsors does VHS, and I would imagine could do VHS-C since it only requires the adapter...Camera Stop.

Truth be told, I have all the stuff to do it, except for the C- adapter. too. I've converted all my old VHS to DVD last year, except for the "home movies". Those are going to go to .AVI's first and then to DVD once I produce them down into productions that are actually watchable (and somewhat entertaining).

Thanks everyone for your replies. These are Super-VHS-C tapes -- so, if I go with a VHS to DVD conversion, I'll loose some of the quality. I've Googled this and found locations outside of Texas but was wondering if anyone has used a service local or non-local that has converted their Super-VHS-C tapes.

No, the camera is long gone. If I had a Super-VHS player, I could stream the video into my MacPro -- but finding a Super-VHS player now-a-days is difficult. A VHS player would work but I'd loose the higher quality video on the S-VHS-C tapes...

I have about 5 SVHS JVC decks from my old video days... I also have a darn $7000 Panasonic studio mastering SVHS deck.. Kill me.

I ain't in the video biz anymore for good reason though. There has to be someone in the Houston area still doing that sort of thing..

Good luck!

What interface would you use on your MBP? Thinking about dumping to DV then to MBP via Firewire or transcode via a DV camcorder/deck?

I bet you can find a SVHS player on Ebay for nothin...

That's what I was thinking - DV to MBP (or my G5) via Firewire or transcode via DV camcorder. Another option would be to find an pass-thru method (hardware) that has s-video input from the S-VHS to the MBP or G5 (via firewire probably).

I'll look at eBay (family members have had some "not so good luck" with eBay in the past and that had influenced my interest in eBay).

If you look at buying an old unit look for a Panasonic AG 1970 with built in TBC (time base corrector), just in case the tapes have tracking or sync issues. I still have my AG 1960 but my Data Video TBC is giving me problems.

The one I have is a Panasonic AG-7750..practically brand new (shape wise)...TBC among other things

I got it through a company acquisition. Actually have never used it.

For those who might want to know: I sent my s-vhs-c tapes to DH Media Services in Portland today. They offer a service to transfer the video straight (uncompressed) to disk. You can either send them a disk or they will get you one (I sent them an extra portable 200GB disk I had). Cost is $15.95 per tape to disk (cheaper if they convert to MPEG-4 and put on a DVD). Will post the results when I get everything back (in about 3 weeks).
