New York vs Chicago Style Pizza - 01-30-2008, 08:07 PM

Who likes what type of Pizza? My preference is New Yawk Style, cooked in a brick oven if possible. Locally Catalano's in downtown Cibolo on Main street does a pretty respectable pizza.

Best pizza in the country is in New Haven - Pepe's, Sally's, and the Spot. After that, Long Island and Queens slices are typically better than elsewhere in the city. My favorite growing up was a place called Christiano's in Syosset, N.Y., which was the place Billy Joel had in mind when he wrote Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.

There's no place I've found in Texas where the pizza doesn''t need toppings, so for my money, there's no really good pizza here. I don't mind toppings (excluding Pineapple and Ham), but a good pie should at least be able to stand on its own.

Yes, New York and Chicago! They both hit the spot, just different types for different moods.
Or depending on where I am at.

My friends consider me a pizzaholic. I grew up in Chicago. I was a pizza delivery guy for the Italian Kitchen in Evanston, by Northwestern U. There's a lot of what is termed "New York" style pizza in Chicago. It's just that a few famous places promoted the thick crust style, so that's what Chicago got known for. Most "Chicago style" pizza you run across around here, the crust is too dense. Just having a thick crust does not a Chicago style pizza make. But I like cracker thin New York style best anyways. My favorite Chicago style is the stuffed spinach kind, but I forget the name of the place now. It's been 29 years since I moved down here. I'm thinking it was something like Alfredo's. But it's almost like a calzone, it's got a top crust. And what I want to know is, where are the cannoli's down here? I haven't had a decent cannoli since moving.

I like a paper-thin, crunchy/crispy crust that doesn't droop when you pick it up from the end. :homerdrool:

All depends.
Best Pizzas that have the works are Chicago STyle, deep dish. I want a PIE.
But for Margaritta style, has to be thin.

Best of all though is to make it a Strobolli or Calzone.

Want one of the best Calzones in Houston: Spaghetti Western off of Shephard just south of I-10. Also make killer pizzas.

Ahhhh! Seriously? And to think, we missed it! Mike always scavenges cities looking for displaced NYers who opened pizzerias. I havent been to NY in 8 months...

I asked for zepolli once in Abilene and they told me that they don't 'sell ponies.' Calzone, sausage roll, knots and the rest just aren't here. But I found a place that has canoli!!!

I just love pizza but I wish I had the chance to try some authentic Chicago and New York.

I'd love to go on a food tour...

1 - Memphis for some BBQ
2 - Chicago for pizza
3 - Toledo for Dogs at Packos
4 - Philadelphia for cheesesteak
5 - New York for pizza, deli, Nathans Dogs
6 - down to Georgia to eat at Paula Dean's place

Your forgetting:

Maryland for Soft Shell Crabs, or anything crab.
Boston for White Clam Chowder
Providence for Red Clam Chowder
Maine for Lobster Rolls
Key West for Key Lime Pie
Buffalo for Wings
San Francisco for Dungeness Crab with Sourdough Bread
New Haven for Pizza (its better than anything in NY, trust me)
