Please keep dh and I - 01-31-2008, 12:18 PM

in your thoughts that we make the right decision.
The detailer called yesterday and wants dh to take an AWESOME job that will help his career greatly (while in the Navy) but not really when he gets out. BUT the job is in VA. We fought like hell to get out of VA and really do NOT want to go back. The Cons list is longer but they are more selfish reasons really. WE have to give the detailer a definate tomorrow.
IF this same opportunity was to the west coast we would JUMP on it.
That said if we turn it down and hope that dh gets the job that he wants which is really likely we don't know if it would be acc. or not.
This is the hardest decision we have ever had to make. This is way harder than decided that the Navy would be a career.
So if you could please keep us in your thoughts that we don't screw this up.
I would greatly appreciate it.
Breezy

Breezy, I'll definitely have you in my prayers.
But, thoughout life we make decisions and take chances.
I've found that it's not the decisions you make in life but what you do with them
after you make them. Keep this in mind...

Can you supply any details as to what the two different duty stations would entail. Current job duties and expected civilian job opportunities would be helpful.

Ray
basically the job in VA is a Precommissioned ship which means it hasnt' hit the fleet yet. So dh would be back and forth to MS until it is release late this year or early next year.
That said, Dh is an MA (Navys version of a cop) He would be the only one on this particular ship. So that means he would deal directly with the BOSS (CO and XO). So for his Navy career should be excellent chances for advancement as it is a precom and a ship. And the fact that he would be the only one.

The other job that we "had" to Naples that he wanted to hold out for again was working with NCIS and he basically was a bullet catcher. Not my idea of a dream job but hey that is what he wanted. And I just want overseas :D
But this schooling and such that he would get with a job like this would help him so much on the outside as he is looking at working with say NCIS, Air Marshals, ATF or what ever they are called etc...
Does that help any?

If the Navy move would lead to a promotion, and in 6 years he'd have retirement, the path to the promo will yield you greater monthly income for the rest of your lives. Weigh that in your decision.

Best of luck. (Bein' an adult can be a bear sometimes. We didn't know how good we had it when we were young.)

Six years is a long time. It may be possible for him to take the precom job in Va and sometime in the future, if he gets in good with the CO, transfer to the Naples job. If the Naples job isn't a sure thing then you have to consider the old adage, A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Not much help I know. I wish you the best of luck. I'm sure the Navy is looking out for it's best interests, so you have to look out for your own. But either way, it sounds like a great opportunity for DH.

Thanks Ray
The Naples job won't be available because it wouldn't be benefitial to the Navy to send him to an intense school for just shy of 3 years commitment. So we know if we loose now we have lost it for sure.
That said I just dont' want to be stuck in VA for 6 years the last 3 there were bad enough and we had hoped to NEVER go back.
But I keep joking with dh atleast I will finally get another "real Navy" homecoming lol since his last 2 weren't ships it was pretty much oh they're home ok good and that was the end of it. I miss the "real" navy life and atleast in VA we will get that.
And for the photography I will have so many outlets since Naples photography was out completely.
Again too many selfish cons for the few pros lol.
Thanks again guys.

I was always taught to take the next job thinking about what it'll gain you for the one after it.

Didn't always follow that advice, though.
