Spring Break: Where should we go? - 02-08-2008, 10:56 AM

My family would like to take a few days during my wife's Spring Break to get out out town. We love the beach, but not at SB. We love to travel, but not spend forever in the car. We live in the Fort Worth area.

Also to consider:
1. We have two boys, ages 1 and 5.
2. We'll be doing a Thursday-Sunday kind of trip, out and back.
3. We'd like it to be within 5 or 6 hours' drive from home.
4. Our travel budget is not sky-high.

Any suggestions?

Garner will be a crazy place. I've been at my friends ranch which is ~3 miles directly across from them (by the Dry Frio) and I can hear the people from the park.

This sounds crazy, but we really had a good time when we did it. We live in Houston, but you never seem to do all the things you want to...you always say, Oh we can go there anytime...but you never do!! We have done this a couple ways..one option...so stay at a hotel in Dallas and every day, go somewhere different...the museum, etc. or just stay at home and do something different every day...our kids really had fun...

There is always San Antonio...I would suggest however you stay away from Lubbock ;) I know its tempting because of all the amazing sights we have, lol, but I would suggest SA instead =D

Jason-I love to camp, but I have a long story on why my wife doesn't that involves losing some keys in the lake, using old sunblock that didn't work and using a tent that had seen better days.

Johan-My wife and I met, started dating in Lubbock (we both worked at the A-J). Maybe we could arrange for some Buick-sized tumbleweeds and some muddy rain.

It's not a beach but we had a great time at Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma Beautiful Scenery and Wildlife. Carlsbad Caverns is great but a little drive. I don't know how the kids would do on any of those trips though, especially the one year old. It's been a long time since my kids were that young. You will probably get plenty of suggestions. There's all kinds of things to do within 5 to 6 hours drive time.

Janice and I visited Caddo lake, about 3 hours east of Dallas, for the day but there were a number of cabins. The boys might be a little small for kayak or canoe but there is a cruise available, abundant bird and wildlife, and should be all kinds of flora and fauna by break time. I think they get some "break" traffic but I'm told they're not like most and generally a different breed of breakers.

Hey...the lake idea reminded me of a place that is nice for a family...I've done a couple retreats there...it's called Chain'o'Lakes just north of Houston. Also alot of times camps will allow families to rent places in the off season...you might check some camps in the area...it's camping without the tent!! (I agree with your wife BTW!!!)

I can definitely arrange for the tumbleweeds, but unless you somehow have an in with the Big Guy, I can't make it rain (not even the muddy kind). I have been caught in that muddy rain before, and let me tell you, it is not a pretty thing, especially if you wear contacts.

As far as Spring Break goes, I always like the mountains, especially in March, of course that is going to be further than 6 hours, more like 8 to 9 to get to Ruidoso. You could always do something like Balmorreah State Park, and go just up the road to the Monahans sand dunes. I am actually thinking of taking that trip in the next few weeks my self.

You might check into Beaver's Bend, Oklahoma, you can rent a cabin and it's about 4-5 hrs depending on how many diapers you have to stop and change.

http://www.beaversbend.com/lakeview.html

Google Maps says 225 mi from Ft Worth to Broken Bow, OK

Our dad's side of the family has a reunion every year at Thanksgiving, a couple years in a row we went to a place called Salmon Lake Park near Crockett, TX

http://www.salmonlakepark.com/

It's built like an old west town with some pretty nice cabins - You can rent cabins real reasonable and there's plenty of stuff for kids to do. I think you can swim in the lake/pond, tho it may still be a little cool at spring break ;) The place is designed for families tho, your little ones would probably love it.
