Car question - 02-10-2008, 12:21 PM

Does TX issue temp plates if you are buying a plateless car out of state? I inherited a car that has to get down here. NY makes you surrender the plates, so it has none. I was gonna drive it down, but TX wont give plates without the inspection. Any ideas???

I can only verify what you are saying. The first thing you would have to do is get the green sheet inspection. To comply i am sure you will have to tow the car until inspected...

If you have a dealer friend, bribe him/her out of one of the paper temp plates they use for new cars. Or you could always take the ones off your car and do a temporary substitution of the vehicle under them. Not perfectly legal I know, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

register the car in NY in your name and then surrender those plates back to NY when you get to Tx and have Tx plates.

Captain Tom may be right, but I would contact the nearest DPS office, or call 512-424-5000 and ask. It's so much less worry to be legal.

Tom is right I suspect, but that will possibly mean paying NY a tax, then possibly Texas taxes again. You probably won't have to send the plates back to NY though. You might want to check out the official sales tax issue ahead of time so there won't be any surprises.

Also, you might check with your local County Auto Registration Department and see if they can suggest a way to handle it.

This is bound to be a fairly common issue because a lot of states issue the plates to the owner, and not to the car, as does Texas.

This is what I did 30 years ago. My insurance guy pitched a fit but I just told him to get over it. I sent the plates back after I got Texas plates. Never heard a word from them.

No, when you trade the car, the plates go with it.

Yep, this classifies as real bad, downright stupid advice.

I knew that, but she just asked for options, not necessarily good ones. I'm so wounded. I think I'd do the register it there and here after option. That way you have a registered car that you drive until you can get it inspected here and then do the registration for Texas.

I'd dig around on the TX DMV website for info. If you don't find what you're looking for, I'd call directly.

Virginia lets you purchase a temp tag via the internet expressly for purchasing a vehicle from out of state and bringing it into VA.

While Texas might not have the same provision built into the system, it couldn't hurt to ask.

As I said, This is true in Texas.
But unless things have changed recently, many of the NE States, WV and PA for certain and maybe MS,(can't remember for sure from when I lived there) issue the plates to the owner. When you trade cars, your old plates go on the new car.

Aha. A case could be made for either meaning, in the way you wrote it, but I see it now.

temp tags - 02-10-2008, 07:42 PM

a few years ago I bought a truck in Nevada, got 25 day tag from txdot for about 25.00. I had to get my insurance to print up a insurance card even though the truck wasnt in my name. Did'nt know if I was buying it till I got there.

That's probably still the case: I know we've gotten some tags good for just a few days to move a trailer from one hunting lease to another: I'd imagine there could be something similar for cars.
