Question Thoughts on this thought provoking article? - 02-11-2008, 08:10 AM

Just read http://digitaljournalist.org/issue08...-for-rent.html and I have say that in business relationships where you can apply it, I think it makes perfect sense.

I couldn't see going completely to this business model, but I could see utilizing it when necessary.

Thoughts?

It makes perfect sense to me. However, I think it will only work in areas where there is a good bit of commercial work to be had. In days gone by, my area was a great area for industrial work, but not so much any more.

I did get a call from a Canadian compny, recently. They were designing a brochure for a company in my area. I got the call after hours, so I returned it the following day. They found a photographer in the meantime, but asked my rates for comparison.

Before she told me what she wanted, I quoted her a day rate. I think she went into cardiac arrest. When they revived her, she said, "Oh, no, we just need about an hour for a picture of their building and a group picture of the employees out front."

So, I quoted her a an hourly rate. "Oh, really? Ok, well, thank you for calling." Ask me why I stick with photographing babies and seniors.

OTOH, a few years ago, my dad had a commercial building built, a house, actually. The contractor charged him rental rates on everything but his hammer and circular saw.

Back in the old days, I used to charge the client for a case of two different speed films, whether or not I used the whole case or just a few rolls. So I guess now you could rent them the space on your memory cards
