Flu - 02-11-2008, 09:44 PM

Wow, its vicious! My poor wife, has been sicker than at any time in the 19 years we have been married. Both of us have been worried sick that the kids would come down with it, but after a scare, we think we have passed the crisis. It hit us at work hard too, lots of folks out with the flu. Lupe even had the flu shot, but no joy, she got it anyway. I have been lucky so far myself, knock on wood

Body aches, nausea, high fever, lethargy, vertigo is what she had. My dad had it, and got pneumonia out of it, and ended up in hospital for a week.

Oh man, you are telling me!!!

The Friday before last, around noon I started just shaking and shaking... Took my temp and it was 102.9

Went to bed, and when my wife found me around 5'ish it had jumped to 104. It stayed there for 3 hours even after hard dosings of Motrin so we headed to the ER.

INFLUENZA!!! AHHHHHH!!!!

It completely crushed me for 3 days. I mean crushed! I could hardly move.

Besides the convulsing, I had the worst headache that I had ever experienced that had me fighting back tears. They gave me hydrocodone, which numbed everything EXCEPT my head.

I'm still not over it. I still have a very bad sore throat, hacking, coughing, and tons of mucus.

But here is the worst part. My 2 yr old daughter woke up around midnight last night screaming in pain. She was on fire with a 103.9 fever. I felt so horrible knowing what she must be going through if she had the same thing I did. What's worse is trying to convince a 2 year old to take their medicine. They act like you are trying to kill them.

She was in so much pain, completely unconsolable. It was over an hour before she just passed out on the floor, and we just made a bed around where she was laying and slept there. She woke up twice and we went through the same routine.

This is my first time going through this with a kid, and it was heart wrenching. :(

Sorry for the long rant, it's been a miserable last couple of weeks.

OH wow..Jim...I forgot about those fun days!!!! My daughter's fever used to get to 105...so I've had some practice!! every two hours give them tylenol or motrin and alternate them...it will keep them tolerable. I forgot about the headache...I get migraines, so the headache didn't bother me as much...but ..oh your little girl...it's hard watching them go thru this...hope she feels better soon.

So sorry to hear that anyone's been sick with that flu:( blah
We've had sooooooo many people in the hospital with it, young and old alike....Get well, drink fluids, rest! The vast majority did get their flu shots, too, so go figure.

I think Lupe's has gone into bronchitus or something similar, back to the doctor with her. I am beginning to realize why the flu was so feared by my grandparents....

Flu can definitely be a nasty bug. Have to remember that back in your grandparents day the flu killed millions and we still lose some that aren't in good health to it every year.

Hope your trip to the doctor helps Lupe keep it in check.

Our oldest (he's 5) had strep last week and now has the flu. The doctor prescribed Tamiflu, which he said we could also give (a smaller does of) to our 1-year-old as a preventative. He did get a flu shot in November.

I'd heard about flu vaccines not always being effective because the strains used for them are a best guess of what the active strains will be for the season. However, our pediatrician also said the vaccine is only 80 percent effective. Crazy stuff!

Hope your wife feels better and the rest of you escape the dreaded flu.

Here's an interested tid bit...because all four of my kids have a heart conditon, we almost always get the flu shot. When we first moved to Houston, 8 years ago, there were a couple years I skipped the flu shot because of the cost and the hassle. So one year our kids kept getting strep. So a nurse (whom I didn't really trust!!) told me that if they get the flu shot, there is something in the flu shot that will affect them from getting strep. I thought she was crazy...well I had to eat my words...We don't even average one strep a year now that we are very good about getting the flu shot. This year is different though...strep and flu have been very prevalent in our house...wierd year I gues...

I wish that was a 100 percent effective thing, Renae. Both my boys had flu shots in November, both had strep last week and now one has the flu. I'm not disagreeing that it may be the case, but I just wish it had worked for us.

Strep=bacterial; flu=viral; illness of any kind=not fun at all.
