I've been traveling for a living for about 25 years now. Hotels are nasty...all of them. But I think most people who travel for a living know that. It's the occasional traveler who doesn't know what they're in for. Not much you can do about it, really. Just try not to think about it too much.

I never liked the idea of those glasses.
Gimme a plastic cup sealed in plastic wrap.

As well, if you ever saw what goes on in the kitchen at most any restaurant, you would never eat out, again, home or travelling.

From somebody who put himself through college as a cook, a couple of thoughts:

1) Always be nice to your waiter/waitress. If you're unhappy with their service, let it show in the tip after the meal. If you choose to come back, do it at a time when that person is not working.

2) Don't show up anytime within 10 minutes of closing time...especially on a slow night. The employees most likely already have everything put away and are just waiting for the doors to be locked to finish up and get out of there. It's worse if you have a large family or group and end up staying way past closing. I personally wouldn't hold it against the customer, but I knew some ticked-off cooks and waitstaff who would.
