From somebody who put himself through college as a cook, a couple of thoughts:
1)
Always be nice to your waiter/waitress. If you're unhappy with their service, let it show in the tip
after the meal. If you choose to come back, do it at a time when that person is not working.
2) Don't show up anytime within 10 minutes of closing time...especially on a slow night. The employees most likely already have everything put away and are just waiting for the doors to be locked to finish up and get out of there. It's worse if you have a large family or group and end up staying way past closing. I personally wouldn't hold it against the customer, but I knew some ticked-off cooks and waitstaff who would.
