Looking for ideas - 02-13-2008, 01:24 PM

I've got a long three day weekend coming up while I'm out here in Santa Clara, Calif., so wondering if anyone has any suggestions on something I should check out. I'm willing to drive 6-7 hours if needed. Unfortunately, I don't have any good hiking shoes or a tripod. Just did the carry-on thing last week at last minute with my 1dmkII and a 24-70 lens. I'd love to find a B&B someplace. Places I've already been (although I wouldn't mind re-visiting) Reno, Vegas, San Francisco, Big Sur, L.A., Yosemite ... so appreciate any thoughts.

Go spend the weekend at the Sandpiper in Carmel. Then just hang out in Carmel. Visit the Tor House, Henry Miller Library, take the 17 mile drive, go walk the trails at Point Lobos. Have dinner at the Fishwife and then go down and watch the sun set at Asilomar beach.

I love Carmel....

Lots of scenic areas along the Pacific Coast Hwy. if you're inclined to drive, stop and shoot, then repeat the processes.

Speaking of Point Lobos, when I was there in 1982 I happened upon two men sitting at a picnic table near the water's edge. As I got closer I noticed that one of the men had a bushy white beard and a straw cowboy hat on. The other man was wearing a Kenny Loggins t'shirt and shorts with black socks.
Then I saw the white Cadillac parked on the side of the road with the vanity plate: Zone V. The bearded man was Ansel Adams. Turned out that the other man was California Senator Alan Cranston. They were sitting all alone discussing environmental issues.
Knowing that I'd never have another opportunity to meet the photographer who greatly influenced me, I walked over and shook his hand....then the Senator's hand, too.
Have a couple of very nice 11x14's hanging on my wall to remember that special occasion....both signed by Adams and Cranston.
Just hearing the name Point Lobos takes me back to a precious remembrance....

I sincerely appreciate everybody's ideas, however, the "real" job interfered and I had to work most of the weekend. I did manage to drive up to San Francisco for a visit. I tried to find a couple of spots to look at the Golden Gate bridge from a couple of different perspectives. I found some interesting views from China beach and Lincoln park.

Here's a few from the afternoons visit.
