We're planning on visiting Austin next month and would like a nice place to stay. Since it will be for only a couple of nights, I figure we might as well do it right. Any suggestions on hotels? Somewhat close to the Capitol building would be nice.

Try the Driskill on 6th Street. It is a restored hotel and is just drop dead beautiful.

The San Jose is an awesome local hotel that I highly recommend.

Wow four views and four responses so far. That's gotta be a record. I second the above two: Driskill and San Jose. Driskill is upscale, classy, but still Austin in the sense that they are not at all snobby. They welcome photographers off the street to come in a shoot whatever they want, you can wear your jeans and t-shirt to the restaurant, etc. It's about as upscale as Austin gets, and yet laid back. San Jose is a really funky little setup on South Congress just south of the river. Lots of very cool local shopping and great restaurants in walking distance. It's basically right where Gordon took these shots in a recent thread.

Both are great choices.

What time are you planning on going? I ask because the SXSW festivals are in March (7th-16th) and usually cause a run on hotel rooms - especially downtown - and an increase in prices.

Driskill is awesome very 'old money Texan'

San Jose is cool, in a 'new money Austin' kind of way.

Driskill is right in the heart of sixth street, about 6 blocks from the capitol. More touristy, less Austiny. Buffalo billiards across the street and the new Alamo Drafthouse about a block away in the old Ritz.

San Jose is in the middle of SoCo/ South Congress - you can see the capitol but it is a bit of a walk (couple of miles maybe). Continental club is right across the street, Mars is a cool restaurant right beside the San Jose, too. Guero's is a margarita's throw away. South Congress Cafe, Vespaio, Home slice :)

Or there's the Four Seasons, just down the street from the Driskell. Or the Stephen F. Austin, just a block up from the Driskell.

and yes, if 'next month' is march 7th to the 16th or around then, then I'd suggest booking your hotel about a year ago.

I think the San Jose was just in a magazine I was reading yesterday. It's supposed to be really cool.

Well, that just stinks. My son is on spring break during that week so we wanted to come down since he's never been to the Capitol. On to Plan B.

Thanks, everyone. I'll keep these in mind for another time.

Don't give up yet. This B&B claims to have rooms "still available for SXSW." My in-laws have stayed there. They enjoyed it.

You might also try the Mansion at Judge's Hill.

you should certainly call up and see, but SXSW is about the busiest time of year in downtown Austin.
