Exclamation Warning At Smu - 02-15-2008, 02:54 PM

Orange fliers dotted the campus Friday morning as SMU police warned students about a man trying to trick female students into posing nude.

The man, who police said had called himself Dean Kelly, had approached students at the Dedman Center for Lifetime Sports, Moody Coliseum and Park Cities Plaza.

According to an e-mail sent by Kappa Alpha Theta sorority to its members, the man has been claiming to be an MTV producer, model agent and photographer. He sets up meetings with women and then asks them to pose nude.

He has approached women on Facebook and MySpace, two online social networking sites popular with college students, the e-mail said.

Anyone who has been approached with such an offer or who has information is asked to call 214-SMU-3388 or 214-SMU-2TIP.

Since when is it illegal for an adult to pose nude?

Perhaps a faith based university is not the best place to look for nude models, but still not against any laws.

Forks are sharp and might poke you!

We must all band our brothers and sisters together and defend ourselves against forks! Alert the media!

Police say that forks are responsible for 3% of all household stabbing incidents.

Don't be the next one to be abused by a fork!

If you see a rampant fork, call our tipline: 18-stopforks

You would think college student would be smart enough to not fall for such tricks.
How hard is it to verify his story? How about calling (212) 846-6000 and asking?

I wonder how many fell for it, and if it might work for me? (J/K)

I guess I have a different take on this. I hope they catch up with him and throw the book at him - whatever that would entail. I don't care about the nudity aspect. I don't care if he wanted to take photos of them in nun habits. He is lying and misrepresenting himself and that just makes it more difficult for other photographers to do business. Sure, the students should be savy enough to check it out, but that doesn't make what he did okay. IMHO.

If there is a law against lying when trying to get women naked, then there are a lot of men who should be locked up.

I don't know about it making it more difficult for photographers to do their business either? I guess I just don't see it. Seems like any photographer who's business plan includes unsolicited inquiries at local colleges, has got a tenuous business plan at best.

Which photographer's business do you really think will suffer from this?

I don't see how this is too very different from a "legitimate" organization like "Girls Gone Wild" The only thing different is the fact that the women might actually get on a dvd and be released nationwide, where as this guy will likely set up a website somewhere, if that.

Do YOU, Patti, know that as an *absolute certainty*?

I very highly doubt that the SMU police do.

I even more highly doubt that you do.

Oh, wait, I forgot: I saw it in an email, it MUST be true.

Well, of course I don't know. Do we ever know with any degree of certainty if anyone is ever guilty - even when they admit guilt while sobbing their hearts out? No, we don't.

I don't have a clue. But, if the report* is true, then I hope that he is prosecuted. I am not familiar with the laws in this regard, but hopefully the behavior described in the original post is illegal, he is caught, prosecuted, found guilty and fined or whatever the penalty might be.

* I'm reacting to this... "the man has been claiming to be an MTV producer, model agent and photographer." If he is an MTV producer, model agent and photographer, then I don't have a problem in the least with what he is doing and it is very unfortunate and unfair that he got bad press. If it is not true though, then I do have a problem with it.

As far as how it will hurt other photographers --- Photographers are already being hassled when taking perfectly legal photos on city streets. All we need is more bad press to make this even worse. There have already been dozens of threads on this forum regarding this. Next time a photographer goes out to a park to photograph a senior, he/she might get hassled because of this. Unfortunately the harm is already done because the bad press is already out there through no fault of his if he is really what he says he is.

Patti

The body of evidence seems to be on the side that he is lying.

Man tries to trick SMU students into posing nude

Though it's likely not illegal, police say action violates campus policy

If MTV was looking to tallent in the DFW area the search would start with a press release and most probably news stories on the local TV stations as well as advertisements in the local news papers. There would no doubt that John Doe with MTV in looking for College students for XYZ project.
We know hes lying and any SMU student should know it too.

It is odd but I'm kinda with Patti...I think it's a female perspective perhaps. If a guy is willing to lie about being a MTV producer to get people to his house or wherever and has the gall to ask them to pose nude, what else is he willing to do? If someone says no this seems like the type of person to take it a step further...i.e. rape or drug them. Being a young petite girl who watches a lot of Forensic Files , guys like this scare the ever livin' day lights out of me. I guess that's just me...
