I'm not that much into astronomy or even night time photography, but I am curious to know if anyone has been able to calculate where one might look to see the destruction of the failing Satellite.
It would be amazing if that happened during the Lunar Eclipse. Where would I need to stand to get a photo of the eclipse as a backdrop for the missile destroying the satellite?
Now THAT would be a photo for the cover of Time magazine!

Now THAT would be a photo for the cover of Time magazine! | You may have missed your opportunity. I watch objects like USA 193, the shuttle, ISS all the time. I spotted 193 Sunday night. I was almost overhead and very bright. Last night it was far off and too light to be spotted. Tried again tonight but only caught the shuttle and ISS. Tomorrow may be its last day in orbit and it is at the far range of our viewing range and very dim. So you may have missed your opportunity unless our military misses with the shoot-down effort.

ok, now you sparked my interest. Any recomendations on an inexpensive telescope that I could place use in my back yard to stargaze? Any ones that are inexpensive that I could attach the 1Dm3 to?

LOL!
I hear the best time to view the eclipse is from 7pm to 11pm, with the totality occuring around 9pm. | | | |

G | The last one I photographed I used a 450mm f 8.0 + 2X on a film body. The moon just about filled the frame. The moon is fairly bright and as I remember the exposure was 1/30th sec. @ f 16 (wide open) on Tri-X (ISO 400). I think I may have pushed it one stop to ISO 800.

The satellite shoot, if it works, will occur over the northern pacific as reported. I doubt we'll see any of it here.
Shoot the moon, pun intended, with any decent SLR or DSLR camera any lens your choice. It'll be bright enough until close to totality. You won't need a telescope.
