MLB Increases media usage restrictions
A few from the article:
- "Sites can’t post more than seven photos from any game online."
- "Audio/video content created at MLB ballparks cannot stay up on a news site for more than 72 hours."
- "All applicants for a press credential must provide advance written notice of intent to transmit any non-text material."
Can someone explain to me how the leagues can do this?
I understand that they have a right to restrict what goes on at their property - access to certain areas, etc and protection of any trademarks and copyrights. But how can they manage to dictate the editorial nature of a news outlet? Is media created by a news outlet at a stadium automatically the property of the league, be it the MLB or NFL? I don't remember anything like that from J-school. :)
I'm just trying to wrap my head around this and figured there might be a few journalists that could fill me in.
