Scouting camera - 03-05-2008, 10:02 AM

Anyone here have any experiences or recommendations they would like to provide to help me choose a good, affordable scout camera for deer and wild hogs? I appreciate it! Must haves for me: IR flash and sensor.

Have you tried the Cabela's catalog? They have a store In Buda if you want to see what they have in person. That would be a great place to start looking

Hi Francis, I'm not sure, but you're not getting many responses, and maybe it's because a lot of folks are confused like me. I have no idea what you mean by a "scout camera". Do mean a camera to be used by boy/girl scouts? Please elaborate.

Thanks for the reply. I have looked on their website but am still unsure on which to get. Was hoping to get some recommendations.

Why wouldn't you then just use whatever camera you've got with a big long lens, and maybe a teleconverter as well? Do you feel that your current Nikon (in your signature) can't handle it?

The type of camera that Phillip is talking about normally comes as a finished product, with the camera in a weatherproof box. It has straps on it so you can tie it to a tree where you think game might appear, and leave it for days or weeks at a time. It is actuated by a motion sensor or by IR. The idea is that it will let you see what game is in the area. No game. Try another area.
Phillip, get in your car and drive the short distance to Cabela's. I think you'll get better advice there than here. This just isn't a hunting forum.

I get it now. I've heard of homemade versions of cameras like this, but I didn't know they made them ready to go. You learn something new every day, as they say. And yes, I've never seen them discussed here before, so the experts are probably at Cabela's.
