Keeping your gear safe? - 03-11-2008, 05:11 PM

Hey Everyone,
So I am talking to a friend of mine that is currently studying abroad. He tells me of how people cut the bottom of your camera bags, open zippers and steal thing, etc. all while your walking! Do you have any kind of tips, personal habits, etc. that you have used in the past? or that you might try next time you travel to those heavily visited area by tourists within and outside the country?
Cheers,
Johan

Really, something like that is pretty hard to protect yourself against. You just have to stay vigilant and get insurance.

I try to look like I dont have an expensive camera. My mum always said, if its expensive (and you are in a country where its possibly worth more than your life) carry it around in a couple of local supermarket plastic bag. Done it a few times, coupled with a shirt for padding, works well and is waterproof :)

Depends on the country, but on many occasions I've seen precautions blown out of proportion.

But if you're worried about security, Pelican case!

Domke has a wood-plate in the bottom, and there are no zippers just clips so you will notice if someone's getting in there. Replace the strap with one from PacSafe that can't be cut.

Seriously? As long as you're not wielding your longest lens and your biggest body? Sometimes a 20D + 24-105 is just as inconspic. as you need. I use a shoulder bag, and keep it high on my waist / hip, on the side or around the front.
