Less Workers . . . More Photographers - 03-17-2008, 12:45 PM

With Bear Stearns going out of business and many mortgage bankers losing their jobs in the near future, I guess we can look forward to a whole new crop of job seekers and unemployed changing professions and becoming professional photographers. After all they have an expensive digital camera. How hard can this be? They can make a fortune the easy way by taking picures. Welcome!

Either that or they will become realtors.

Today's News - 03-18-2008, 11:21 AM

March 18, ATLANTA - Delta Air Lines said Tuesday it will offer voluntary severance payouts to roughly 30,000 employees — more than half its work force.

More photographers coming to your town.

ultimately, i think this is going to work in favor of the full and part-time professionals out there (yes, you can be a pro part time.)

eventually, enough people will get burned by amateurs with too much time and too little skill, and word will get around. more referrals from real customers to real photographers!

Well, if the competition worries professionals, then perhaps they need to rethink their business model. Ever since I been involved in photography, I've questioned the way that the traditional business model works, but then again I come from a technology background and not the artistic side of the world.

I agree with Will. Quality will eventually win over poor product. There will most likely be casualties along the way, but in a free market society, the customer is always right (maybe not correct, but always 'right'). YMMV.

Yep more fuel for the fire ...
The US dept of Labor says 170,000 full time staff photographers.
I have heard well over 2 million other PT pros all competing
for less pie.

I love Pie !!

Ya'll cut it out. This can't be true because we're not in a recession, so, no way we're losing jobs. And, I might add, the ranks of the photography world will surely shrink. So just quit it. LOL.

However, there will always be a market for both.

Now I'm not one for Govt intervention in the field of photography but a license to operate as a professional photographer would help out the photographers making a living. Or maybe a task force to ensure non Business operators don't get away with not paying their Taxes.

my comment is probably out of context to the thread...
