Question Non-Photography Houston Question - 03-20-2008, 03:39 PM

I haven't been at TPF long, but from what I read, everyone seems great and very knowledgeable. With that said, I thought I'd give the Open Talk thread a try on an issue that's been perplexing me. Where or who do I contact in Houston to try and put an end to my neighbor's *&^%$# barking dog. I'm a big dog fan, which is why this bugs me. This guy got a yellow lab as a puppy for his kids. When the puppy grew up, the kids lost interest. Now the poor thing hangs out in the small back yard and barks from about 7 am to 10 am and then from about 5pm to 10pm--I'm not kidding. I've looked at the abuse laws and they are clear--he's not abusing the dog, just ignoring it--which does not appear to be illegal. Home owners assn. have said they sent one of their famous "letters"...yeah. I've checked the ASPCA site, the Humane Society, and most of the local news sites--notta...zip. I don't want to call the police and register a noise complaint, but I'm getting very close to leaving my "happy place". Any suggestions? And if this post truely does not belong here, then, please, someone delete it.

I have the same issue... my neighbor's dog will not stop barking. Everytime i go into the backyard he barks and barks. I am a dog LOVER and i know my dog used to bark incessantly but i fixed it. I also do not know what to do. It is annoying to not even be able to go into your back yard or garage or throw out trash without the darn thing barking.

I would love to know what to do. This dog is not neglected however, just annoying.

ditto for me too - only our neighbor's dog is vicious at the fence. we have actually had to put two slats over for them to replace the slats the dog has chewed out. he ferociously attacks the fence every time we are out - which is about 6 times per day - it's annoying as hell.

I had a beloved cronic barker. She was a great pyraness and a wonderful dog. She was an indoor dog. The family loved her to death. Had I known these dogs barked that much and were pretty much breed for that I would have not let the family talk me into getting her.

Anyhow, She would bark everytime she went outside the whole time she was outside. Cops showed up many times even when she was inside. One night she kicked the bucket. Turned out the Neighbors were really tired of it - or someone was. I still hate to think about it to this day but someone Posioned my dog. Of course no one admits to it but I'm sure that is was happened, and the Vet also said it. She was only 4 years old.

Anyhow, I spent many dollars to stop this dog from barking. One thing I would suggest to try "as the nieghbor" and no it isn't poison is to get one of the stop bark devices and see if they work. Anytime the dog barks the this releases a high pulse sound and stops the dog from barking by pretty much freaking the dog out. I tried this with my now long lost friend and it worked for a while but she got use to it. Maybe it just stopped working I don't know but it did work. BTW Humans can not hear the sound.

They cost about 30-40 bucks if I remember correctly. I bought my from Dr. Foster Smiths on the internet. You can trust them, they are by far the largest pet supplier on the internet.

If the dog is farther away I would run an extension cord as close as you can to it.

Hope that helps,

Sorry to hear about your dog. I lost a Shelty I had for 16 years about 4 years ago. Trust me, we have no intention of hurting the animal at all. On the contrary, we want it to stop barking in a major way, but also want it taken care of. I'll check out the no-bark device.

Get a sonic bark stop device just like they said above. Trust me it works. I borrowed one that runs on a 9v battery and mounted it to the fence. After a day or two the dogs next door stopped barking at everything they saw. After a couple days remove the device and see how things go. If the barking starts up again place the device on the fence and let it do it's job. If you want to go the cheap route get one that you have to push the button every time the dog barks. It's a pain but a lot cheaper. I was lucky and had a friend with one that was bark activated. He used the device to break his neighbors dogs of barking all the time..

As a dog owner, I'm putting my two cents in. I have two labs that will bark occassionally. I have lived in the same house for 5 years, the older lab has been here the whole time he's 10. My younger lab for two years. My dad had to move out of his home. So he asked if I could keep his dalmation. We gladly took him in, and it went to hell in a hand basket. He was used to 26 acres of freedom. . . then went to being an indoor/outdoor dog at my house. The only thing is when he was outdoors he barked constantly. WOULD NOT SHUT UP. I tried the collar and it worked for a while, but eventually he wore it out. . . my neighbors called the police and filed a complaint. I had already spoken to my dad about needing to make other arrangements for his dog, because I knew it was driving me crazy. With no warning, at all I was served a ticket for $500.00 by the police for the barking dog. And was told that everytime they recieved a phone call I would get another ticket. . . at $500.00 a piece.

Yeah, I certainly don't want the police involved--just was considering that as an option. I'll go for the sonic thinggy and see how that does. Hopefully that will fix the issue. BTW, did you ever solve the dalmation issue?

sounds like you need a shock collar. best investment I ever made when training our dog. It's not needed for ever dog but some dogs are just so focused you need something to get their attention.

similar. The device stays in one spot and hopefully the dog learns that he can not bark in the spot any longer. the collar your trying to stop him from barking all the time. I found that a little more controlling then just using a zone idea to training. every dog is different and will respond differently.
