Question Model Shoot Question - 03-21-2008, 11:37 AM

Not really sure where to post this one, so here goes.

I shot my first series of model photos a few weeks ago as part of a workshop. The model were compensated based on the participants fees. Each participant was allowed to retain the shots of the model. Every shot was neither non-nude nor implied-nude. The models indicated they had no issue with us posting out the photos. My question is what is the protocol (both "written" and un-written) for posting these photos on a forum and/or my personal website. I have zero intention of using them commercially. I would also credit the model and the workshop. I would just like to get some C&C on the technique, etc. Again, I'm new to the whole model thing and just want to ensure I kept everything 100% above board. Thanks for the input.

Travis, welcome to TPF and Model Shoots. You have no problem in posting the photos on this website (or other photo websites) or your personal website. I'd limit "credit" on the model to a first name or professional name only to protect her privacy. Often, a workshop or shoot will provide releases in both directions; i.e., a model release to use the photo and a photo release for the model to use in her portfolio but these releases are generally only required if you plan to use the photo commercially; ie. sell it.

I always play it safe and have the model sign a release. On the back side of my model release is a photographer's release so they can print the images I provide to them. I always provide the model with a copy of what they sign as well as my photographers release.

Better safe than sorry...

The only one of these kind of shoots that I've ever been to was put on by Rolando Gomez, who has been on this forum from time to time. The model release was separate from the price of the shoot, and he said that if you did not get with the model to get a release you would only be able to use the photos for your personal portfolio. I don't know if that means online portfolios as well as an actual print one, or not. Did you ask the folks that promoted the workshop you went to?
