having been a frequent recipient of driving awards - i'm always the fastest person in my class - i am something of an expert on this.
going to court is almost always a waste of time. i've tried it 3-4 times and only been let off once.
deferred adjudication is a wonderful system of legalized bribery. you pay the municipality about 30% more, and we all forget this little episode took place. keeps the money in texas instead of in the hands of the insurance companies! not all judges allow it, but i have only ever run into one that refused it (georgetown). typically, they say you cannot recieve any other citations anywhere in the known universe for the next 90 days, but they are rarely checking.
defensive driving is also a great option given that it is so cheap and available on the internet, typically for about $25. you pay court costs, but you still come out ahead, especially with the insurance discount. i got zapped for $280 the other day, and since it's been more than a year since my last d.d. course, i can take it again. total will be only about $130 and it will take 6 hours. i know the damn course so well i can practically take it with my eyes closed!
another great option, if you have some time, is community service. i did yardwork at the courthouse in a little town in west texas for about 6 hours one day, and made friends with the judge to boot!
i can also verify that if you decide to "round file" the ticket, that you may find yourself in a holding cell, but that's a whole 'nother story....
i know, i know....shocking. problem is, i grew up on a farm and was driving all over before i was 10. i also grew up racing motorcycles. my internal cruise control is just set about 15mph faster than everyone elses!
oh, and by the way....the $450 valentine one radar detector is the ONLY one worth the money, but NOTHING will save you from a cop with a laser!
