Have I Taken My University of Texas Longhorn Too Far? - 03-30-2008, 07:31 PM

Edit: I can't edit the title, but it should read "Have I taken My University of Texas Longhorn OBSESSION Too Far?" Sorry about that!

Hey Guys,

I just wanted to post some photos of the 1966 Karmann Ghia that I've been restoring for what seems like the last 17 years. I'd say it's about 90% of the way there. I still have some final interior touches (new handles, a new steering wheel) and then, of course, the Longhorn flags, the burnt-orange fuzzy dice etc... Also, a friend is working on some "refrigerator magnet" type BIG Longhorn silhouettes that I will be able to put on the hood and the trunk and maybe the sides and then peel off at will.

I realize that it may not be displaying as pure burnt orange but, trust me, it is. It's just really hard to get it exactly right because my image host, Pbase, runs some kind of funky software has a tendency to mute colors, especially reds, oranges, and yellows.

I ask you: WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME? HAVE I COMPLETELY LOST MY MIND?

No, no not at all. It is perfectly normal to paint an entire car to represent your favorite football team

I am sure it will be quite a conversation starter! I would just be selective about which towns I went cruising through!

Cool car, by the way. My husband would totally drive it :)

Nice job on the car. The interior looks really nice. As for the colors....

Growing up, there was a doctor in the small town one over from mine who painted all cars he and his family bought the exact same shade of burnt orange.

Personally, I think you ought to put that Karman Ghia up for sale on ebay motors...playing to an alumni's sense of pride can often pay pretty well.

My girlfriend can't understand it at all. She doesn't get the whole "school pride" thing.

I think, when I finish this one, I might actually get bored and buy something else to work on. I might actually sell this one after I've had it awhile. I dunno.

Agreed, you did a great job with the restore. But really, those colors....not a soul in their right mind would do that

Personally, I don't either. But I'm a little weird anyway. Nice car though.

If I had a dollar for every UT alum who took their Longhorn obsession too far, I'd need help lifting the loot!

Nice restoration, but not ALL of us like the colors.

Well, yes, you have lost your mind, but many do. I'm sure many folks think you've lost your mind just because you're restoring a ghia, not including the specific color scheme. So is it running? If so, come on out to the fabulous first Thursday Austin Aircoolers cruise this Thursday night. We meet at Deep Eddy Pool parking lot between 7:30 and 8pm, and then about 8:15 or so we leave to cruise down South Congress Ave. in a massive display of aircooled power. We end up at Rockin' Tomato pizza on S. Lamar after the cruise, for suds, pizza, and karaoke. In fact, if any other TPF'ers want to come out it's a place to find a collection of 30 to 40 old vw's, with a porsche or corvair thrown in now and then. Possibly some photo ops. Attendance depends on the weather. More info here:

Oh yeah, here's mine, with no particular school attachment on the color:
