We have lost one of the greatest of all Classists. If you have never read his translation of the Iliad, you need to it will take you to the shores of that wine dark sea.

"While faithful to the spirit and intent of the original, his translations were remarkable for their narrative energy and verve. His “Iliad” and “Odyssey” had a Homeric swagger, said the poet Paul Muldoon, a colleague at Princeton, who also compared Mr. Fagles’s epic vision to that of film directors like Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah."

"The market wants a Leica to be a Leica: the inheritor of tradition, the subject of lore, and indisputably a mark of status to own."

That is very sad. I have always held his translations in high esteem and prefer them to the Lattimore versions. He was one of those resources humanity shouldn't be without.

Great translator of both Homer and Virgil. His translation of the Aeneid is remarkable.
