Continuing Education Photography - 04-14-2008, 10:55 AM

Hi all-

I'm interested in some feedback on the Collin County continuing ed classes offered in Plano. Are any of you instructors for these courses? Have you taken courses at the CYC center and would you recommend them? Thus far, what I know of photography is self-taught. I read - forums, books, etc. I have a Canon XTI and it's my first digital SLR. My passion for photography is huge and I'd like to really move forward with it. I work f/t and have young children so it's hard to make time for my hobby but I try to; I take pics of just about anything/everything.

Thanks.

I can't speak for those specific courses, but I think you are heading in the right direction. Taking at least one class can greatly improve your confidence and skills. You might meet a few like-minded people in the process.

I'm not sure of Collin County, but Brookhaven College has a good photography teacher, he has been teaching it for about 30 years if I remember correctly. His classes are fun, adaptive, and well worth it. He has day classes, and night classes, usually meet once or twice a week. Teacher is Dr. Travis Ueoka.. awesome guy!

You might also look into your community. In the larger town near us, there is an art center that offers Photography Classes, as well as painting/jewelry, etc classes. In our small suburban town, we have a community center that offers photography classes as well.

Also Wolf Camera/Ritz Camera offers photography classes. I like to take different ones, because I learn different unique tips.

I have taken the "Advanced" class with Eric Roth and I found it to be pretty good stuff and I am also taking a Photoshop class with him as well. I say give it a try.

when u take a class, make sure you ask the teacher questions - lots of questions , show them pictures above and beyond what you have done for the assignment, ask them how they got to where they are, ask them about the type of photography youre interested in doing

and plus - make friends with all of your classmates, try to arrange shooting outings with them or tag alongs for your assignments ... just stay involved

you'll learn a lot through the interaction - more so than books IMHO

Quoted for truth.

Beyond the first intro class when I just picked up my DSLR, the most important thing out there was the contacts I made with other students.

Avoid Richland College night classes.

Also think that you can probably learn as much/more from setting a game plan, and shooting towards that game plan. Pick a topic for a weekend/week/month, and shoot only that topic.

Cool! Thanks for the feedback. I've searched some more and found a couple of groups here in Plano and McKinney that meet on a monthly basis. May join one as well as take the class.
