Talking Dental plans inquiry - 04-16-2008, 05:07 PM

Need some guidance and advice here. Short and sweet. I need a dental plan. The VA hospital won't see me unless it's an emergency (I'm a veteran). I've asked most my friends but they already have insurance through their companies.

For those of you who buy your own dental, who do you have? By the way I'm in Houson if that helps. I've been searching for 'dental plan, insurance'. I'm not originally from Texas. 4 years prior to this I was taken care of by Uncle Sam so researching my own dental insurance is quite new to me.

The main question is what do you need done? If you need something done right now, you are out of luck with regular dental insurance. Most self insured dental plans have horrible waiting periods. Mine is 6 months for everything including basic work. Major dental work (root canal, crowns, etc) are 18 month waiting.

If you need something ASAP I would suggest a dental discount plan. You pay like $12 A month and pay a discounted rate to the dentist. Had a root canal using a discount plan and paid half what it normally costs.

I use www.ehealthinsurance.com . I am not really happy with them as I have both the discount plan AND dental insurance through them and the dental insurance is more than twice the price and I can't really use it.

Hopefully someone who has had success with self insured dental insurance will post!
