Here is an excerpt from a recent review of the new Canon XSi on Best Buy's website:

"in the auto setting it still takes professional looking pictures. I have been dissapointed in the past with my pictures but with this camera it does all the work and it makes me look like I know what I am doing."

Maybe this should have been in the "Business" section, but this kind of stuff just makes me cringe when i see it. They have no idea what a camera can do!

Consider the market for the XSi, though. More than the previous cameras in the Rebel series, it's attempting to capture up-and-coming point-and-shooters. It even uses SD cards rather than CF, because many P&S cams use them, too. In a non-challenging environment with fairly decent lighting and motionless subjects, it probably does produce nice images in "auto mode." With its 12 mp sensor, those images can even be printed to big sizes.

Those who are really interested in learning about photography will become better themselves, and probably have a great time doing it.

Ya, i do agree with you about the market, and yes it will give people the opportunity's to expand their photography knowledge...if they so choose. But i guess in me reading it, it caught me off guard. Maybe it is because i am mainly in the wedding side of things, it almost scares me a little. Not that i am saying that they can produce better images than me...but they are going to let all their newly engaged friends think they can...and at much less to free. I know this has been a discussion topic many times; and i dont want it to turn into that. It was just reality slapping me across the face more than anything

I know what you mean, but it's nothing new.

I'm editor of a small newspaper, and we get submitted photos all the time (like for youth sports teams and things like that). Photo quality is awful. But it's nothing new ... point-and-shoot cameras give some people that same confidence that they can take good photos without thinking about it. The reality is they often stink. Only difference now is that if they submit a digital image, I can look at their settings and camera information if I wanted to.
