Helping out a friend - 04-18-2008, 06:20 PM

We all have friends that need help from time to time. I was just called this morning by a good friend of mine that could be in some trouble. I listen to his story and it's a sad one. First he was dumb to use his computer at work and write emails. And more dumb to get invovled with whom he got invovled with. Sounds like his mail is local only so that was a plus.

So I have sent him all the information he needs to clean up his mess just in case something happens. Better safe than sorry. It's amazing how something can go wrong with a relationship and you are now worried about losing a job. How can some people be so hateful as to try and destroy you because of a break up.

There is some great infomation out there on how to clean up your email (outlook) and make is so some one cant recover the deleted files. I usually work on the other side of this I am usually the one undeleting peoples files and such for my non photo gig. I also found a great little free eraser program that beats DOD specs. Hopefully things will work out and the fire will die down with out any issues.

I am using that eraser program right now to clean up some old client info and personal files. I thought I would pass that along just in case some one needed to clean up some personal files.

To bad its not that easy at work. Many times the emails are stored on the server. And since your friend surely doesnt have acces to the server(or he would know how to erase files) all the eraser will do is erase the emails off his computer. And leave the files just "deleted" on the server at best.

Sorry to hear about your friend -- I would hate to have to be in that position. I'm sure you already know this, but a lot of organizations are required to keep at least one secure copy of all communications (whether paper or electronic) for 7 years, and they are audited regularly for compliance with that directive. Doesn't sound like this is the case for your friend, which is a good thing.

If in fact his email is "only" on his computer, then it can be destroyed, and irretrevable, but if he ever sent it to someone, then the person on the other end would have to do the same.

My former boss used to say all the time "If it could be embarrassing or carries a liability, only say it over the phone -- Never write it down!"

Very true, but some companies record conversations "for quality control." Best not to use a work computer, phone or time for anything personal.

That's why I walk to their office and say it in person.

I made a mistake one time... a long while ago... when I worked in tech support. I left work for the weekend and forgot to log off my computer. I came into work on Monday to a missing computer and to find out I was fired. Turns out that someone opened up a picture of a nude photoshop of Hillary Clinton on my computer over the weekend and it didn't matter that it was a secure building and records could show I wasn't even there.

yeah the IT folks dont back up the emails. It's only a pass through server. There is not exchange server. He's lucky on that part and everything is kept on the workstation. welcome to the world of public education. this isd is not set up like a corp they are told to keep email and such but if you delete and think it's safe some one can retrieve it.. Unless you create a new profile in outlook after you have dumped all your emails from the delete folder then you can assign the new profile to the old pst. thus losing the deleted files.

The boy is lucky he's still got a job and no one has taken his computer yet. I figure the manager knows what went on before and is letting it go. It's not like everyone there didn't know these two where in a relationship.

Girls are crazy. Thats why they never get my work email, work number, and if they're new, where I live.

My cell is all the information they need to contact me on those late lonely nights. lol
