Video Editing - 04-21-2008, 08:57 AM

I didn't know the best place to ask this. I'm sure there are some in here dabbling in video if nothing but for home movies. I'm looking at the top 3 talked about home editing software.

Adobe Premier Elements 4, Pinnacle Ultimate 11 or Ulead 11.5. Does anyone have a comment about all or any of the products?

From what I've heard, ULead is very user friendly.

My very 1st NLE package was Pinnacle Studio 6 back in 99-2000 and I'll tell you this... I've used Studio 6/7/8/9 and all of them are memory hogs. APE seemed kinda chintsee IMHO

Currently I use Sony Vegas 7HD/DVD Architect 3.0 and they are unreal.. The platforms are great, features are awesome... depending on how much you want to spend, and I'm assuming that you are wanting to buy this... I suggest not going El Cheapo.

I consider Pro-Sumer NLE's kinda like Photochop. Vegas, AVID, Adobe Premiere(not elements) among the best for simple home video editing. I've used them all and Vegas was my pick.

As someone that doesn't know much about the topic. What are going to be some of my limitation of going with the cheaper method?

This is really showing my ignorance on the subject but I just want to dump videos from kids performances, church events and small things to DVD with some editing capabilities.

I honestly don’t see me spending a few hundred bucks anytime soon on video software.

well Roby... any NLE will do you just fine with what you are needing... keep in mind that some will have more features, but those feature you prolly won't need.

As my first NLE, pinnacle Studio for about $100 has the capture from camera to computer tool, AVI/MPG2 NTSC 29.97fps and DVD burning utility... it's simple to use.

Back in the day for me, it's was the bee's Nee's... All OTC NLE software bundles will have transitions to use and video effects to plugin.

I used to shoot and edit video exclusively. Unfortunately, I am not familiar enough with those apps to give you a suggestion.

Adobe Premiere has always been one of the easier home apps to use...Sony Vegas is very nice as well. I used Final Cut Pro on my Mac and Premiere Pro with Canopus DV Storm system on PC.

Things have come along quite a bit over the last few years...I am sure most are pretty decent these days.

Good luck!

+12345 on Final Cut Pro... my memory isn't working right now... I've been trying to think of that one for about 3 hours

Elements is just like Photoshop elements, a waterer down version aimed at the home movie editing. The biggest issue is how will you get the video into the PC? If it is dv it's not a big issue if you have a 1394 option on the pc. I use the Adobe Production Studio on a Matrox NLE.

Broadcast Minor in College here... spent hours upon hours working the AVID and whatnot.

Of course, none of that matters to the newspaper where we are "stuck" using Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0 and a JVC soccer-mom hard-drive camera for our web videos.

It is really a very easy program to use, but like Photoshop, there are a lot of little buttons and things that you have to learn. Since I came from a linear editing background, it was all just second nature to me.

I don't know if they've come out with any patches, but Adobe Premier Elements 4 is very buggy out of the box. A friend who is a technology teacher got one for free at a seminar and gave it to me to try since he's pretty happy with version 3. It was constantly locking up or suddenly closing. I did a search and found that a lot of people are having problems with it. I use Ulead VideoStudio 10 and am moderately happy with it, although I think Adobe has a few more bells and whistles. If I had it to do over again, I would probably go with Adobe's version 3 and leave it at that.

I have both Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas.

I prefer Sony Vegas, as my computer is getting old in its age, and if I try to load up adobe premier my computer explodes. Plus Vegas seems easier to me.
