how much 'stuff' do you guys collect? tutorials, lighting diagrams, actions, etc...

i have TONS of it - and i'm tired of it cluttering up my drives. i also have scrapbooking material - which means, digital files - 95.0GB's worth to be exact.

is there something out there, i can put on my server - in which i can stash all these goodies - that would be for my eyes only - but still allow me some sort of organized access to it?

any ideas?

janet

Janet,

Hard drives are cheap. Buy lots of them and use them. I have 5 computers, 1 server and 17 hard drives in my office network. You can buy a Network Storage Devices and put on your network that is basically a hard drive for you to store things on. You want drives on your local network especially when your ISP starts charging you by how much you download.

Janet,
I have something like this at home.http://www.westerndigital.com/en/pro...sp?driveid=279
and I have a couple of these http://www.buffalotech.com/products/...e/terastation/ at work.
If you google "home small office NAS" you'll find lots of choices.

Although spendy, I like my old Snap! Server, but it is, by comparison, quite small, and if it weren't so reliable, and racking at a thin 1 unit, I would be selling it. Only about 400GB, but in a raid configuration, so down to around 300gb, which is quite small. Sadly, it cannot be upgraded with bigger drives, since its internal addressing screme <sp intended> is only something like 24bits....pity! But Adaptec will be more than happy to sell you a NAS that will provide lots of room and take lots of cash!

We're spinnin' about 10TB at any given time, but in addition to stills and restoration, we are also vidiots, doing video and audio transcription and restoring, so the space goes a little quicker for us. I expect to be doubling that soon, and am looking at mirroring that off site on a mutual aid basis soon.

i have looked at those in the past - i currently have 3 drives IN the computer - and 4 hooked up externally at all times, with another 3-4 off in cabinet-land.

do those buffalo things come empty where you can fill them up yourself? i really wish i knew how to do a home server - i've got two kids on opposite sides of the country - and having access would be way cool...

thanks for the replies and the suggestions

Microsoft home server is nice. if you have the spare parts laying around its easy to build.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...r/default.mspx

or you can buy one of the HP pre built Windows Home server. It will handle up to 6 Tera bytes of hard drives. 4 Internal drives and up to 4 USB drives.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16859105383

I built my own out of an old dell PC. Remote access to files and all other kinds of goodies.

My home server has been running non stop for about 3 months now with no problems what so ever

Janet - yes, you can buy empty NAS devices and put whatever size drives in that you want.

However, you'll probably get a better deal if you get it all together. It doesn't sound like you need several terabytes or anything. Something like this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822186050 would probably suit your purposes just fine.

More that are fairly cheap (all 500gigs) -

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/sh...=12-47659972-2

If you are willing to spend a bit more for expandability you could get this - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=513048&is=REG
Comes with 500gigs, and has three more empty bays you can fill up.

nice feature on the buffalo system (which i currently use) is that it use a tera system which can be accessed via internet. nice feature when you are afar and would like to unload your cards to computer at home without makeing the drive. you can also view anything which is on your drive also
