How does one acquire a press pass? - 04-28-2008, 01:26 PM

I've been to a few games here and there and i have been able to get good shots with my telephoto lense. (astros, Texas A&M). But I always wanted to get down there with the rest of the photographers that get great shots. how does one get these press passes? Anyone can show me the way?

I've been told that you have to either work for a publication/media company or know someone really well who can get you down there.

Most large events issue their own credentials. Usually, for press credentials you have to show that you are representing a bona fide media organization or that as a free-lancer you have lots of previous publications and having you there will be an advantage. Submit a request on letterhead or submit news clips. Back when I worked at newspapers, we had our own credentials, which would get us close to a police investigation, press conference, or high school sporting event. But for something larger, e.g., a pro sports event or political convention, you either need to have a previous working relationship with a major magazine or newspaper or submit a request ahead of time. If you don't have a relationship with a publication, maybe offer to provide some photos for someone in exchange for a credential request on their behalf.

If it's a major event, it will be harder to shoot on speculation rather than have an organization or publication hire you first. Most pubs do employ freelancers, so that might be your best bet.

all of the events i have shot on press pass have required you to be submitted on a list from a known publication. try identifying a magazine you think might take your work, then contact them and see if they will add you to their list. many times magazines cannot cover all the events available, so you might get a shot...literally!
