attempted PayPal theft - 04-29-2008, 07:16 AM

I sold my MC-30 yesterday, and the buyer used PayPal. There was a USPS issue with his address, which was PayPal verified, and by the time I got the issue resolved and tried to print a USPS label, my PayPal debit card was denied. I re-entered the information a couple more times, and then went to my BofA debit card. I then logged into PayPal only to get the message that they felt a 3rd party had tried to access my account. I had to change password, security question, and prove my location, but the account was frozen overnight. I'm glad that they were on top of things. I got the PayPal Security Key last year, and I guess it might be the best $5 I have spent, since it prevents access.

I got an email once saying that I had a Paypal payment.

I logged in to see that someone had sent me over $2,000. It looked completely legit as it was an instant transfer.

I emailed the guy saying I think he sent me money by mistake. Then I contacted paypal support.

Later in the day the guy called me freaking out that he never sent that money out, etc, etc... I logged in to Paypal to refund him the money and I had a pending transaction to withdraw that $2,000 to a bank account I'd never heard of.

Needless to say we were pulling the alarm bells and got ahold of Paypal who fixed everything.... To this day I have no idea how this person infiltrated mine, or this other guys account. But I do know it stemmed from eBay.

Kinda scary stuff.

I delete all email with paypal in the subject. I never opened an account, but get emails virtually every day about "my account".
