Corrupt jpg question

I just bought a Sony HD Camcorder (HDR-HC5). The still images are all corrupt for some reason. Brand new Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo card.

Question is, could this be media related, or is it almost assuredly the camcorder? It was an eBay purchase, so if it's the camcorder, I'm screwed.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. All resolutions in which the camera can shoot have this issue. The thumbnails look fine.

That's pretty strange looking, have you tried another card in the camera or another card reader to read the data with?

I wish I could--I only have that one card, and it was just taken out of the package (I don't use Siny Memory Sticks). Could be bad, but I don't have a backup. That will be the next step, I assume.

I actually had something similar to this happen in my Canon DSLR. What I discovered was anytime there is an interruption of power it is possible. In my case, the battery grip was not fully tightened or had slightly come loose which allowed for a momentary power loss, even if only slight.

I had something that looked like that occur on my first digital cameras, a Nikon coolpix 5700. I had bought it used on craigslist, but it turns out there was a recall on them that I only found out about through a usergroup forum. It wasn't well publicized. So Nikon did fix it for free. So you might check and see if there is a forum about that camera, and if anyone else has had the problem.

if the thumbnails look fine, I fail to see how it could be the camera, or at least the sensor portion of it.

format the disk, and try again. Or buy a new one, format it and try it. Also try a different card reader. I had a similar problem years ago and it was the reader.

I think it's a counterfeit memory stick. I'm going to try a new one.
