Simply put, giving you credit does not satisfy the legal requirement. The legal requirement is "your permission" to do so. He may use a hyperlink to your site, but not the actual file. Quoting and citing the source is only legal if, again, permission is granted to do so. It rarely is, instead a link is more often used back to the owning site.
Since most folks are unaware of copyright rules, assume it is an innocent error on his part. Start by firmly but politely writing a note to him to remove the image. If that doesn't work, a letter to his hosting site regardling copyright violations would be the next step and is often all it takes.
