Chron photog Nick de la Torre a TPF member? - 05-13-2008, 05:31 PM

If so...I gotta ask why the photo at the top of B2 today was of a buch of guys standing around and not of me slapping the pink cuffs on the suspect?

Pretty sure the shooters aren't responsible for what gets printed, but I saw him shooting from the far sidewalk and made a point to check the Chronicle just in case. That incident didn't take long to materialize and he was there for the meat of it. Must've been at the Starbucks on Augusta, or something.

Matt must've been a subject of de la Torre's shots for an event / story covered by him and the Chron, and while he understands that the Photog just SENDS the picked images and it's usually the editor that's picked from what he's sent, he'd like to know why the picture which he thought was better, didn't run. He also understands that d-l-t was there for the incident...

I think. Why not call the office and leave a message, or send him a PM. This seems like a matter that would be better handled in smaller realms.

On the money, though I have no idea what other shots he made.

I'm not truly concerned. This was more tongue-in-cheek than a serious query. Just thought that if Mr. de la Torre was a TPF'er, I'd yank his chain a little.

Guess it backfired.

If you're really curious you can shoot him a message via Sportsshooter. Nick's a great guy and pretty fun to work with / around. Met him while shooting football last season.

I met Nick one time last year. Seemed like a really nice guy. Much too nice for the likes of our rag tag scoundrels here on TPF

Folks, I appreciate the thought y'all are putting into this, but really....it's too much. To break it down: the photo to which I'm referring was at my scene and was taken just after I walked off to look after my rookie. I cuffed the guy, looked up and saw a photographer snapping away.

But, then, if I'd been in the shot, the editor would've run it front and center and the Chronicle would've been flooded with calls from women...

Hello Night Owl,
I really wish I was there when you put the pink cuffs on the guy. I , randomly, drove by and saw a hand full of firefighters holding the man in question down thought this is weird, good luck finding a place to park. Parked, ran up and it was all over.
Why did you use two sets of cuffs? Why are they pink?

Ah-HA! You are a TPF'er! Someone on SS must've dimed me out. Anyway, as I stated above, this was more of a "hey...I was there" post than anything else.

I used two cuffs, because he was a large individual. Often, persons of larger build can't bring their wrists together close enough for a single set. He also appeared to have an existing wrist injury I didn't want to aggravate by putting too much pressure on it.

The pink cuffs question is one I endure each time I bring 'em out. The reasons are twofold: 1. Cops lose cuffs all the time. Someone else transports the prisoner, etc, and they have a habit of disappearing. I'll bet these never get lost. 2. Some prisoners often "trash talk" about how big and bad they are. The pink cuffs kinda blow holes in that theory.

I've heard rumors that the mere threat of pink cuffs has persuaded minor offenders (like tipsy bar patrons) to behave. Haven't tried the deterrent effect yet.

At any rate...thanks for the response. My rookie is much more photogenic, anyway.

Think pink handcuffs are bad, I have seen the news feature a jail that used pink jumpsuits! Now that will "blow holes" in the tough theory for sure! Maybe all jails should adopt this! HAHA
