Going to Alabama - 05-13-2008, 10:03 PM

Ok, I am going TDY to Hoover, Alabama for a class. The map shows that it is a southern suburb of Birmingham, AL. I will be in class most of the day, and am travelling light, only my D80+18-70mm lens and SIG P-220. Anything good to shoot in that area? I haven't been to/through Birmingham since I drove to Fort Benning in 1982 to attend the Infantry School. Since I will not have a car, my options are limited, but should the D80 with the 18-70mm be enough, and what in the heck is there to see in Birmingham, AL?

From my understanding Hoover is a sprawling suburb. It is similar to Stone Oak on crack.
The only suggestion I have heard was oak mountain state park. It is the largest state park in Alabama and is relatively close to Birmingham. It has lakes and trails.
Other then that you are limited in great convenient places.

Enjoy

Hi I don't know if you like motorsports and to be more specific motorcycles but there is a museum called Barber Motor Sports just out Interstate 20 at about the first exit out 20 toward Atlanta that has an astonishing amount of antique and newer motorcycles displayed in an awsome arrangement. Please check this out there are over 700 bikes displayed inside and there is adequate lighting and room. You are free to photograph the bikes for personal use only. I really enjoyed being there.

Don't know about photo ops, but there are plenty of bars to visit.

Sorry I can't be of more help, but it's just been so long since I was last there.

I just got back from Alabama. I was in a town that probably won't even show up on google (uniontown). I drove up to Birmingham over the weekend. I had my camera on my lap for the better part of the 8 hour drive to AL...with only a handful of photos along the way on the highway but hey, your taste may be better than mine. Nothing I noticed along the way worthy of stopping and spending time shooting.
