Farwell, friend and neighbor and true journalist - 05-14-2008, 05:47 AM

Most kids liked to watch cartoons as I did but I made an exception every afternoon to watch the "The Scene at Five". Watching Ron and Doug was a daily routine and of course it leads to coming back at six for the regular news. That was weird because kids didn't watch the news, but as everyone says watching Ron Stone was watching the news it was listening to stories told by a friend, someone who cared. I had watched the "Eyes of Texas" with Ray Miller religiously and when Mr. Miller retired (who is another great story teller) Mr. Stone was by far the best person to lead the program. A man who knew Texas and Texans. He knew the importance of the history and heritage of Texas. We are lucky that the native of Oklahoma came to Texas like so many other great Texas icons. Ron Stone was all about people and that is I think the best way to describe him. I have had the opportunity to meet him many times and was always greeted like an old friend. Several years my daughter had the opportunity to participate at San Jacinto day celebrations and when she would say hello he would talk to her like on of his own children, asking about school and her recalling the conversation from the previous years conversation. A man who must meet thousands of people he had an unbelievable memory. We didn't live next door to each other and never had a chance to sit at the same table and talk over a meal in person, but when he said good night neighbor you knew he was talking to you. Farwell, friend and neighbor, some day I know I'll see him again and I know he will have a group of people sitting around him listening to him tell stories and I will pull up a chair, say "hello neighbor" and listen too.

I remember the comfort I felt as a kid to see Mr. Ron Stone tell us about the news. I only knew his on-air persona, but I will miss his kindness and his eye's of Texas specials. He and his family are in my prayers. He was a great Texan!

We always watched Ron Stone and as long as he was there Doug Johnson as well. When Doug had his radio program on KPRC there was a time when the promo narrator said "Doug Johnson never seems to have a bad day." followed by a little girl's voice saying "I like to watch you on tv.". That was my then 3 year old daughter. I only got to see Mr. Stone one time very briefly. He was very genuine and friendly and acted like he was glad to see everyone and not put upon by being admired. There are a very few who approach the person Mr. Stone was, but most fall far short. I know of none on a national level with the exception of Paul Harvey. It's sad we can't have more in media like these great men.

My favorite journalist by far. I will miss even his ads. He definitely left those he touched one way or another better than he found them.

I was really saddened to hear about Ron's passing. He was the beginning and end of my definition what a local news anchor should be. I've been telling people I miss Ron Stone's news since he retired. I watched cartoons until 5pm when my mother would change the channel to "Ron Stone on the Scene at 5" so it would be on when my father got home. I still even remember the catchy song they used to play. Farewell Ron.

Ron and Doug pioneered the concept of the friendly repartee between the anchors, before them it was pretty subdued. I had dinner with Doug Jiohnson at a talk he gave, and they were always pulling pranks on each other behind the scenes. Ron will be missed.

I had the pleasure to see Ron Stone do an actual "Eyes of Texas" episode while in college in Huntsville. What an experience to see him work. He was everyone's neighbor for sure. He will be missed.

I grew up watching Mr. Stone (and Dan Rather, Doug Johnson), and so many of the news icons...it's no wonder I ended up in journalism! I know I will miss Mr. Stone, just as I miss Mr. Johnson, Sylvan Rodriguez, Marvin Zindleer, and I will miss Dave Ward when he retires...
