Best Texas Beaches and Waterfronts - 05-14-2008, 10:15 AM

I am thinking about a vacation home in Texas.
On Beach or Lake or River and not too far from Austin.
Maybe just a view or even with a boat house / dock.
Padre might be far ...
is the water there better than the smelly oil
mess in Houston ???

Any Ideas and Pictures would be appreciated.

LOVE South Padre. No comparison at all to Galveston and their brown water. Sorry, no suggestions for Riverfront or Lakefront around Austin.

I vote for a lake, simply because Mother Nature isn't has aggressive inland than outland. You're more likely to find a bit more property and distance from neighbors. But that's just my opinion. And for lakes, there are many not far from Austin, even if you've got to hoof it a little north of Austin more toward DFW.

Check out lakehouse.com, which has listings of waterfront homes for sale across the country and in Texas.

Although the beauty of the coast surpasses most lakes, and the call of the salty sea is strong (and my mom's family went back generations of living on a tiny island in Virginia).

But it's still the only place within driving distance where you can go (with a 4x4) on July 4th weekend and the closest person on the beach looks like an ant. Besides, anywhere you visit where you do not own property makes you a tourist as well.

With all the lakes in the Austin "area" (Travis, Marble Falls, LBJ, and Buchanan) you can't find anything? Or were you looking for something a little farther away than those? I hear Lake Conroe is pretty nice, but I have never been there so I can't verify that one.

Only Butt head cant find lakes in Austin but Beavis would look for more cost effective.
I know a Nice Waterfront 1 acre in Jonestown at $429,000 land only + master HOA dues.
Get my point ???

Check out Port Aransas and Aransas Pass. About 3 - 4 hours from AUS.

Padre isn't anywhere near Austin for starters. And it is Gulf of Mexico water, albeit a bit less river-fed dirt than Galveston but not a lot better. The farther south you go on Padre (ie, South Padre) the better the water but the more expensive it gets, depending on the Mexican economy. And regardless of what anyone says, it ain't anything like Destin or the Florida gulf coast.

Good river sites would be along the Guadalupe, San Marcos, or middle Colorado. Also try the S San Gabriel river n and w of Austin (Leander area?). If you go to the southern end of the hill country (just north of Uvalde), the Frio is excellent (es muy frio!) and still relatively reasonably priced (but less so each day)

Lake Limestone is a very quiet lake near Hearne that I've visited some, not much scenery but it's clean and the folks are friendly, like most of East Texas.
