do you confront?? - 05-14-2008, 11:50 AM

So several times, I see people using photos that I assume they don't have a right to use. Now granted I am assuming, however, when you see the same person do several things, they begin to add up. This family I'm speaking of, is a high profile family, and in the past this is what I've seen: photos with the copyright ALL over the photo posted on myspace, photos as a cheerleader with no copyright or watermark on them (and I'm sure they were professionally taken), and several other monetary issues not related to photography. So this family asked me to take their daughters senior photos, I politely refused, and several times asking, I finally gave in and sent them the prices. Now my prices are ridiculously cheap and I'm aware of that. They never called or discussed it again. So yesterday I get the announcement (yes of course they want a gift ) with a homemade senior photo and on the party invitation is the cheerleader photo and a cap and gown photo. I already have issues with this families integrity. Which really bothers me....would you say something?? What do I say?

well, this has been discussed on another forum i'm a member of as well, and i'm of the opinion...it's not any of my business to be the photo police.

no, i don't think it's appropriate, and if i had the opportunity to catch someone using a photo they shouldn't, i'd contact the photographer and let them handle it, but i would not personally say anything to the family (unless i knew them well enough to say 'hey'...

I think you did the right thing by politely refusing their business, and that's probably all you need to do.

Besides, some photogs do license images for limited use (such as on the Internet) with or without watermarks. That may not be the case here, but it might be.

Does a continued relationship with them have any value to you?...Can trash talk from them to others be of any lasting harm to you?...Either let them have it or let it fester...Ben

I'd leave it alone. I know that can be difficult, but it's probably the best course of action in this instance.

Why lose a perfectly good paying customer. Charge them for a DVD of internet pics and move on all the way to the bank.
