Favor for a friend, but not really - 05-15-2008, 11:26 AM

Kind of confusing title, but bear with me.

I have a good friend of mine who has taken on an enormous endeavor. Some may have seen the story in the Mesquite paper, but he is handing out backpacks full of necessaries to the homeless in Dallas. So the title is accurate in that I am helping him spread the word about what he is doing but the favor isn't so much for him as it is for the homeless in Dallas.

What he is trying to accomplish is to help the homeless, not with a temporary one time handout, but an ongoing effort to help acclimate them into society.

Please check out his website: http://www.thepositivenote.com/main.html?src=%2F

He describes the work he is doing, what he is hoping to accomplish, and what each person can do to help.

In each backpack he puts things like razors to socks to a Bible.

So why I am bringing this here is so that I can spread the word and hopefully get others to help the homeless. My friend, from the beginning, doesn't want this about him or what HE is doing, but about the work done to help the homeless. It is a very enormous endeavor, but one in which even those without a job (myself included) can help in some way. Bibles can be purchased at Mardel's for $1.00. Washrags and socks can be bought for really cheap as well.

If there are some here who would be interested in helping in this endeavor, please either let him know through his site or let me know and I can get any donations to him.

I appreciate your time in reading this,
Jeff Green

Just adding an article that talks about some of the work he has done to give you an idea of what this is about.

Thanks, Michael. A lot of people do the "here's some cash" and that is all well and good at times, but this is about long term help for those who need it. Any amount of help is wonderful as it is more than they have right now.

Sounds like a great effort. I noticed on his Web site that he is interested in helping these folks get connections to accomplish more. As a magazine editor, and later working for a church, I worked with another Dallas organization that, I think, does great work in job training and helping folks connect. Your friend might contact the folks at Dallas Central Ministries. Thanks for letting me know about this.

Just wanted to bump this thread. I went out with him today and handed out food, took pictures for him and had a good time. I hope others will be willing to help him in this endeavor.
